Just for the fun of it, what's he asking? I'd buy it for $1000 tops and part it out if anything, then scrap the rest. I would also not feel safe driving that thing down the street.

I've seen it before. a good friend of mine did a few frame swaps just like that. its a factory recall. look into it a little. not sure if toyota still supports this recall....

backstory

yesterday as some recalled
i made a post if i was stupid
to buy a 4runner sight unseen..

..called a dealer
got a good vibe..
first thing i asked was any
frame damage/major rust..
not that he can see he tells me..

in lieu of putting a deposit down
i booked a flight..and used that
as my deposit to show i was
serious in buying..

during my first layover
he emails me to call him..
..after further inspection..
ie when he finally put it on a lift..
he noticed the issues..

i asked what is the cost to
fix he says he doesn't know..
hes a car salesmen not a mechanic..

me sitting at the airport
not knowing wtf to do..

..the flight has gone..
and now i am sleeping
at the airport tonight
and flying back home tomorrow..

i feel in love with a pretty
on the outside 4runner
and a lemon under-neath..

Box Frames tend to rot out. For $4k on a 2000 4runner i would bet that the dealer knew about the frame rot before you asked.

If you are willing to travel that far, just buy one in arizona/texas, or any other southern states that do not see snow and salt. I bought my 4x4 99 5 Speed in AZ for less than that truck is listed for, so deals are out there. I like to stay away from dealer when buying used cars, and i really only use craigslist to buy cars. Read the buyers guide, it will give you more things to look for and better ways to find more trucks.

Bummer you had to get on a plane to find this out. That salesman should be tied behind a car a drug down Black Bear pass.

Next time have them send you some pictures. I bet every car salesman has a cell phone with a camera and can send pictures.

Frame rust recall is for Tacomas.
My 83 had much worse frame rust and it was still OK to drive for a long while.
I finally swapped a new frame under it, but I wouldn't buy one like that.
One frame swap is enough for me.

Former Toyota tech here, recall is also for Sequoias and Tundras not 4Runners.



Keep your eyes peeled for gems, they come up every once in a while. That's how I got my 4Runner.

Rust like that underneath? RUUUUNNN! After having one with some pretty bad rust before (but nothing like what you showed), I made up my mind to only consider those with little or no rust underneath--after all, that's what's holding everything together, and what mods get bolted or welded to.

Texas

As JohnsD90 mentioned in a previous post, Texas has plenty of 4runners without those issues.

Be careful when looking in other states that are not known for rust issues because, dealers will move cars to different states. For example, guess where some of the cars that were flooded by Katrina hurricane in Louisiana ended up at? Up north.

I did a quick search on CL and here are a few examples of 4runners for sale in the Lone Star State:

My favorite:
1996 Toyota 4runner Lifted&Locked - 170K miles, 5speed,TRD E-Locker, Light Racing upper Arms, 285/75/16 KM M/Ts
price is a bit high but it looks awesome. you can get something cheaper but, by the time you do the mods this one already has....it comes out about the same.

This looks clean: 164k - 2000 Toyota 4runner limited 4x4
(price is a bit high but, owner says negotiable).

Lifted with e-locker: 2000 Toyota 4Runner Limited 4x4 V6 Auto Lifted E-Locker

Have patience and a good deal will appear.
