Is this service legit?

So back in September last year, I took possession of my brand new 4R TRDPro. Last week as I rolled over 8,000kms, I got a warning on the screen saying service is due. Shortly after that, like a day later I get an email from the Toyota dealer saying I need to bring in the truck to get it serviced. I asked what its about and this is their response:

"No, the service is not complementary, the vehicle is due for service every 8,000km.

This service is $54.00+tax which includes - service 1(maintenance service) going over your entire vehicle, wear and tear parts, brake wear, tire wear, belts, hoses, break lines, filters, fluids, top up all your fluids, lubricate locks, hinges, checking all lights, wipers, etc, Your oil change will be at 16,000km."

So to me it sounds like an easy cash grab and just have someone look around the vehicle. What is your take on this?

As for the oil changed, I've just completed the second oil change, so for sure I'm not going by their recommended every 16,000kms.

It's a good idea to do an oil change after the first several thousand km/m. Sounds like you've already done that.

Anything else would be them just looking over the vehicle for issues and taking your money.

Yes that's what I figured. First oil change I did at 1,700kms and most recently at 7,500kms.

Did the complimentary 2 year maintenance come with your 4runner? The only time I've had to pay for anything so far is when I paid to have the oil changed sooner than what was recommended in the owner's manual. I like to change the oil every 5,000 miles...so the first check up I paid for an oil change, the 10,000 mile check up the oil was changed for free, and I'm about to do my 15,000 mile check up and plan on paying to have the oil changed again.

There is nothing complimentary offered here for new Toyota's, that's why I asked because some brands offer that for the first couple years or so.
I'll have to look at the owners manual and see which and when the important service dates are because for things like this I will not be wasting my time and money for, but I wanted to make sure I'm not missing anything here...

That's exactly what it sounds like to me. You could easily do all of that yourself in 15 minutes.

If the dealer actually performs an honest inspection and really does inspect each item then I wouldn't necessarily say it's not legit, especially if you are the type that wants to have proof that all scheduled maintenance was performed. I do all of my own maintenance so I do a quick once over at every oil change (every 5000 miles).

i only brought mine to the dealer for the first 25k miles. Only cause it was complimentary. After that i will do everything myself, i dont trust a dealer as far as i can throw them. Maybe if there is a recall ill go there but that is it. They will do anything to just try and get money out of you. Charge ridiculous prices for stuff you can get yourself a lot cheaper. When I bought my 2012 SR5, I was given a certain amount of free service including oil changes every 10,000 miles. The first service included No oil change at 5000 miles and floor mat adjustment! Really happy I brought it in for the floor mat adjustment. You don’t want to let those get out of adjustment. It actually said that on the receipt. I have long since stopped taking it to the dealer.

don't waste your money. every 10000 miles is fine. i just changed my oil last weekend after 10000 miles, the oil is black but not very thick. i checked the wix filter and it is still in good shape. i can still see the filter's original color.

in addition to that, my old 4runner's oil was changed every 10000 miles and now has 156000 miles with no engine issues.

this gets done every time I bring my 4runner in. has been since the day it's come off the lot. I've never noticed an extra charge for this, simply it's on the work order. I can tell they actually do some of those things because my fluid levels are always full after, I'll get a brake pad report and I can see where the locks etc have been lubricated. even if I go in for an oil change I'll ask them to do this

I noticed lexus does the same thing. I do change my oil every 8,000km though

I'm sure it would probably be fine to stretch it out to 10,000 miles, but for as cheap as an oil change is (Less than $70 last time I paid at the dealer) and the fact that I only drive about 10-12K miles a year...it's just kind of like extra insurance for me changing the oil every 5,000 miles/6 months.

I hope I can get 156,000 miles and many more out of my 4runner...love the damn thing!

My 4Runner is new and has less than 5k miles, and hasn’t been serviced yet, but I seem to remember from my reading that one worthwhile thing that happens at that 5000 mile service is a tire rotation.

I wouldn't let the dealer touch it unless warranty repairs. Do the maintenance yourself and document. You'll thank yourself when skid plate bolts aren't stripped, wheels are torqued correctly, spiders and slips are lubed correctly, etc.
