ISR Mod write-up?

ok so before i get bashed... i DID search but i cant find the link for the revised version of the 01-02 intake silencer removal mod. The one i have linked below is wrong bc the newer 3rd gens do NOT have the nipple on the front of the engine as described.

i just took the elbows into a muffler shop with me and tested a few pipes till i found one that was tight
 
ya i went to 4 shops before i found one that would do it for me... i told the guy wat i wanted and he was like "uhh ok" and then tried to charge me $15 for 5 min of work but all i had in my wallet was $6 so i told him i could either give him the 6 or he could keep it and now im a proud owner of a 2.5" pip that was expanded at the ends to 2.75"
 
i went to some beaner tire/muffler shop... i will nvr go back there bc the guy tried to rip me off. He told me to pay him $15 and well i gave him $6 and left. U should find a shop near ur side of town and make sure they will do it for cheap.
 
The shop in that write up is in my neighborhood! I called them and I've talked to them before, unfortunately "george" doesn't work there anymore. not for a long long time. I'm picking up my pipe tomorrow! He's gonna take a 2.5" OD and expand it to spec. This should be a good upgrade to the way the motor works and sounds. ALso plan on doing an exhaust system (magnaflow) soon

I printed that link out a while back and was looking at it resently and wondered if there is another way to do this mod or is the method in the link the only way to do this?

Any ideas?
 
Is there anyone that could possibly explain a little more how to re-rout the air tubes. I read that part of the write up three times, and looked at the pictures, and Im still not quite getting it. Kinda like my calculus class. = ) I have the 98 SR5, so theres only one tube coming out of the one box. I know its probably really simple. But i need some illumination here
 
well if u have a 98 then u should follow the link that i posted first since that one is meant for 96-00 4runners... the 2nd link is ONLY for 01-02. I thought the write up was confusing too even after reading it a million times and looking at the pics but once ur under the hood with the laptop it makes more sense.
 
ok so from wat ive read and this has been debated for a long time now... theis mod is supposed to add 5-7 rwhp, make the engine/exhaust sound a little beefier, and hold gears a little better (longer on hills).

This is not a guaranteed thing and i did not get a chance to drive the 4runner after adding this so ill keep ya updated on if i can actually feel anything or not bc i think im not as bias as some since i figured it was an $8 mod so if it works then kool and if not its not that big of a deal. I see it as "if u dont try it, ull nvr know"

keep us posted i was looking into a CAI but this route with a drop in k&n might be a better route
 
Skydivingdude, how'd you like the result of the ISR mod? I tried this 2 years ago and couldn't find the 2002-only write up (most only covered 96-01 models apparently) and turned my 4Runner into a large and expensive paper weight in my driveway for a few hours. I might tackle this this week.
 
So last weekend I posted a small write up of what I did to my airbox and this weekend I decided I'd change out my plugs and wires, and being you have to pull the ISR off to do it, I decided I go ahead and do this mod.

I was able to score a 5 5/8" long piece of pipe from a local muffler shop and had them bell the ends to just slightly over 2 5/8" diameter. Their cuts were a little rough, so I borrowed a neighbors bench grinder and smoothed the edges out. Then, using some wheel and rim spray paint that i'd purchased to repaint my center caps with, I painted the piece to give it a nice silver finish and hopefully prevent any rusting and add some heat protectant.

There are some nice ISR mod threads already written so I won't bore anyone with all the details of another, but after I changed out my plugs with some nice NGK's, and a new set of NAPA oem plug wires, I installed my newly painted intake pipe, pulled and reset the EFI fuse, and started the old girl up. I haven't had a chance to drive her yet, but from just giving it some gas in the garage I can't tell any real noise difference, although as my stepdad pointed out, "it does sound strong", for what thats worth. Looking forward to taking her for a nice Sunday ride tomorrow morning :D
