There are many ways to do it, but here is a good write up. Intake Silencer Removal Mod - 2nd Gen 4Runner - YotaTech Forums
Also check out this thread for some tips. Post your ISR Mod Pics! - Page 2 - YotaTech Forums
I did mine and it is simple you just have to find the right parts. Feel free to ask any questions.

bigbsvo: it is a mod to remove the intake silencer and replace it with a bent pipe. It ends up producing a louder exhaust and helps out with power in the 3k-5k range. Some say it helps gas mileage, but I haven't seen that. It is worth doing for how cheap it is.

Yeah i dont have a computer at home, but the school computers dont let me go on yotatech :'(
so the mod is pretty much putting a cold air intake in place of the stock intake?

Essentially yes, but at a much cheaper price. It should cost you at most $50 compared to a CAI which are close to $200. It allows the air to flow free from the filter to the engine. Some people have put an aftermarket air filter on the end, but I just used my stock air box.

This is mine...

I bought a kit of e-Bay for $60, modified it a little..

The center section with the 2 nipples should be blocked off (I plan on putting a new tube in place without the nipples), the kit has them routed to the breather tubes on top of the timing belt cover, basically a huge vac leak! I also opted to not use the Cone Filter...

I used my stock air box with a K&N factory replacement filter, its also a lot quieter vs. the cone!!!... Works very well!

After reading the writeup on this mod, from the yotatech, I'd recommend using a tap instead of messing with the o-ring/washer combo. Just put some pipe thread tape on the brass fittings and don't over tighten. I used this same method to mount my nozzle for my water meth on my scion. It sprays at a minimum of 150psi and has held and doesn't leak. Just thought I'd put in my .02

Thought about it and maybe having the muffler guy who bends the pipe weld in a couple fittings on the pipe to have a permanent seal.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to go stainless.

I have noticed a gain around 3k-5k. It isn't anything real special, but definitely holds my speed at some inclines easier when on the freeway. Also acceleration is better at those rpm's. Plus it creates a nice sound and is worth it for the money.

Ha, i barely run my v6 over 3k as it is. But I am thinking of doing this one day as I hate dropping to 3rd going up some of the mountains around here.

For us Auto guys we have to...:ybrick: My sweet spot for acceleration is 3000- 4000rpm depending on the situation...

yeah i usually keep it in 4th going up some mountains but 5th gear in 4runners are almost pointless

Yes unless you on a flat free way I almost never use it. Definitely still thinking about this isr mod and the deck plate mod just to maybe get a little more pep for passing people here n there. Not sure if it will give me what IÂ’m looking for, but seems like a decent option
