ISR on '02 question

Woke up this morning and figured I would knock out the ISR mod on my 2002 4R. While looking at it I noticed the vacuum hose coming from the intake silencer and don't know what to do with it after removing the silencer.

I found the how-to guide for the 2002's on Yotatech but the pictures are no longer there which makes the guide almost useless to me (I'm a visual learner when it comes to mechanical things).

My question is: what is the purpose of the vacuum hose, what does it do? What do I do with the hose once the intake silencer is removed? Do I re-route it somewhere?

I'm also starting to reconsider doing the ISR mod at all. I've already done the deckplate mod combined with a Borla muffler so the engine is breathing better already (there is a noticeable difference in throttle response). Is the ISR really going to make much more of a difference?

I believe I left my hose disconnected. As for difference it's not major but I swore I could feel it.

I put a barb in my new tube that replaced the silencer, and connected the hose to that. That way it is basically going to the same location as it is in the stock configuration. Seems to be working fine.

I thought about it, but Toyota put that hose in there for a reason haha I don't want to just leave it open if it serves a functional purpose

Yeah, I couldn't say off the top of my head where that goes, but it is allowing something to either passively vent oily air, or pull in filtered ambient pressure air. In neither case would you cant it just laying around open. It's either going to breathe out oily fumes and make a mess, or suck in dust where it doesn't belong.
 
By that argument they put the ISR and air box without a big hole in it too!

Adding a hole to the airbox is just unrestricting the flow of air to the intake to compensate for the greater amount of air my Borla can let through.

Disconnecting a vacuum tube that is serving a purpose by either blowing or sucking air as part of the intake system seems negligent.
 
I'll take a picture of mine when I get home, but I used the method that gets rid of that hose and re-routes it through the other hardline on top of the intake manifold. Pictures explain better.
 
Indeed they are. What did you do with your vacuum hose Ripcord? I was checking out your pictures in the build threads but couldn't tell where the hose went.

I'm sure someone else has some photos.. But if you follow that hose under the intake plenum to the back side of the engine, you will see it goes into a small black cylinder (thats the FPR). On the backside of the plenum itself, you will see a small capped off fitting. What you need to do is connect that to the FPR with some vacuum hose.

Some people use the small metal hose that is bolted to the top of the plenum that otherwise isn't being used.

I don't know what the purpose is for the hose on the V6, but just put a barb fitting in the new intake pipe around the same location and it will work the same. You will not notice any difference by doing an ISR, it just unclutters the bay a bit.

So, here is what I did to re-route that line you have circled. Please excuse the HIDEOUS engine bay...

Remove the tube you have circled. Chuck it. Seen in photo 1

Photo 2 shows a new piece of vacuum line routed from the nipple on the back of the intake that is currently capped to the currently un-used metal tube.

Photo 3 shows another new piece of vacuum line attached from the other side of the currently un-used metal tube to the FPR.

Yeah, I've considered this mod but the mileage payback and increased sound effects don't seem worth it. The deckplate mod didn't seem to do anything on mine which I attributed to the smaller airbox than on my '03 Tundra with the same engine.

My '99 4R doesn't seem to have nearly the pep and response that the Tundra engine has - even with added grounds and new plug wires. Is it gearing? Auto 4R vs. the '03's manual truck tranny? A 4-yr improvement in ECU and ignitions? The 4R gets 300 miles per tank in fuel mileage vs. 400 miles in the Tundra.
