Issue Rolling Rear Window Up With Key

The rear window works fine from the switch within the vehicle on the dash. The window will roll down all the way with the key FOB button, but when I put the key in the lock on the rear door I cannot get the window to roll up. At all.

I don't hear anything clicking or like something is trying to work. Just nothing. Also, how far would the key need to turn? I'm hoping maybe it's just stuck from not being used and not a motor issue... That doesn't make sense though because the window works fine otherwise.

Any suggestions?

What? 3rd gen can roll up with key, but 4th gen doesn't?

My 2004 goes down and back up with the key, should only have to turn the key less than 1/4 turn for it to work, if it doesn't you could have a problem with the switch since it still works with the key fob/remote and dash switch.

Yeah I guess I should have mentioned for others who viewed the thread.

I have a 2004 V6 SR5. Hmm it does seem like there some issue going on back there with the switch potentially. Everything else on it functions normally.

might need to cycle the inside switch auto feature, try that and also check the window lock button.

Try hitting the cylinder with some graphite lube and working it a bit. Sometimes those rear key cylinders can get sticky in one direction. It's just a keyed switch so you probably won't hear anything besides the key turning.

When you mean "try hitting the cylinder" do you mean around the lock or somewhere else beneath the covering of the door?

I think I've already done that because initially when I got the car the key FOB button would not lower the window at all. It would just beep. I performed the said reset and now it lowers with no issues.

Had same problem with my '03. In my case, the key cylinder wouldn't rotate all the way to engage switch. After trying several attempts at spraying lube and break free in cylinder, I finally had to replace cylinder and key with a new set. Now it works fine, but I now have an additional key on my key ring.

I usually get the graphite stuff in a small can and it comes with a small plastic tube, stick that into the actual lock cylinder where the key goes and spray it.

I don't know if rust is an issue in your area, you may want to hit it with a small puff of PB Blaster and let it sit before working it with the key, then using the graphite to lube it. The key here is small amounts of spray, you don't want to just blast this thing like a hurricane, you're looking to break it loose and lubricate it lightly. Not baste it like a thanksgiving turkey (mostly because all that stuff will run inside of the door).

I'm assuming this is in the owners manual. I'd better start digging through the glove box.

On my '03 Limited, the rear key switch works as follows:

With vehicle locked, turning rear hatch key to left (counter-clockwise), you can hear vehicle unlock, and two seconds later (if you keep key in left position) the rear hatch window goes down. If you then turn key to right of the center position (clockwise), you hear the vehicle lock, and in two seconds the rear hatch window will go up. The lock/unlock function at the rear key switch also locks/unlocks all the side doors.

For the record, 4th gen 4Runner back windows can be raised and lowered with the key in the liftgate key cylinder. Counter clockwise to lower, clockwise to raise.

Mine got sticky in the counter clockwise (lowering) direction. I cleaned and lubed the cylinder by wetting the key and inserting it multiple times, and wicking light oil into the cylinder. This made things much smoother. However, the key needs to be given downward/rightward pressure in order to turn counter clockwise. The electrical aspect works flawlessly, just the key cylinder has some wear and needs to be fussed with to function properly.
