Issue with Reverse, Need Help - 2001 Limited 4X4

Just picked up this 2001 Limited with @ 220K. Drives great, nice and straight, rides smooth. I've noticed tho, when I put the truck into reverse it feels like something is binding up. I have to give it gas to get going and as soon as I let off it stops it reward momentum and feels like it shudders to a stop. I don't thinks its the e-brake because if I put in neutral it has no problem rolling freely in bakcwards. I can put the trans into drive and then back into reverse and that sometimes will allow it to move smoothly in reverse. Tranny fluid looks clean.

On another notes...how long should it take to engage 4 Wheel drive after pushing the button. Is it instant, 5 seconds, 30, 2 minutes?

All tires same size, cneter diff not engaged.
I noticed it taking a good 40 sencods to get into 4x4.

It usually takes the vehicle rolling a bit for 4WD to engage on these "newer" 3rg gens I've noticed. Just nature of the beast I guess. My 96 is instant though

My 98 can take a few seconds to engage, if I'm not moving it takes longer.

The reverse symptoms you are mentioning is not normal.

01 4x4 here. I wouldn't discount the ebrake as the culprit, by moving forward some it may loosen it up then making it easier to reverse. Mine started to do this after a rear brake swap and rear lift. I haven't messed with it though.

4x4 engagement time can very. I find it the quickest going slow, between 10-30mph and letting off the accelerator and coasting it will engage almost instantly. However when I first got it the previous owner didn't use it so it took some time exercising the engagement before it would do it quickly.

It doesn't like to engage quickly if accelerating, deceleration is the key.

I have a 98 J shifter manual transmission so this is probably about as relevant as advice for a Honda Civic, but I found that you have to get rid of all internal forces between the front and rear axles to get out of 4WD. I have different ratios front (4.1) and back (4.3) so after driving 100 km down the paved highway in 4WD part time (LOL just kidding, it was after driving on the beach) there would be a lot of internal forces and it wouldn't come out of 4WD. All I had to do was go backwards a smidgeon which neutralised the forces and it popped out. It could be something similar happening with yours, if you have weird forces going on between the front and rear it doesn't engage properly.

I tried reverse this morning with no ill effects at all, on a couple of occasions it was OK. I will monitor it. Are there points to grease the shaft, would that be a good place to start?
