Sorry guys for the first post being a tech post just need some help

So up until about 3 days ago the rear window worked great.. both with the key in the lock and the switch in the center console. Now i did a search and tried all the common fixes, Window lock button, Reset the memory, Rear defroster and wiper work when closed, No door ajar, and so on with no luck. Here is where my issue is different than any of the 200 I have read and searched through so far. My window will work and function normally with the hatch rear open (reverse of what it should do). It will roll up and down with both the key in the door lock and the switch but as soon as I close the rear hatch or get it close to the sensor it stops working. Everything else seems normal the light works fine in the back turns on when the door opens and goes off when its closed. The wiper motor will only work with the window up like its designed to. I'm out of ideas to check at this point.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the connection for the rear door. Sounds probable the wires are losing contact when you close it. I don't know what "sensor" you are referring too, I don't know of any sensor that would affect it.

:couch2:

I was guessing the door ajar sensor had was some how tied into the system.. ie if the hatch is open it stops the rear window from working. Do the 3rd gens not have a re hatch sensor tied in like that?

After looking at the wiring diagram i'm not seeing anything connected to the back door ecu that would cause it to not work when the hatch is open or closed...

I could have swore that i read a post that said it had to be full closed to work

So now I'm back to the start I guess.. the fact it works when open might be a broken wire in the loom coming down into the hatch.. guess thats where i will start after work

Welcome to the club of 4runner rear hatch issues. I wiol send u the t shirt. Lol. Start with basics like checking the wire going to the hatch st the top left make sure none are damaged. If you have a test light or dmov test power ground and signal to the rear control unit which is inside the rear hatchlight labled as relays in the wiring diagram. Mine has a bad control unit causing the window not to work at the switch and no rear wiper.

Most likely you confused the fact that the WINDOW must be fully closed for the defroster and wiper to work.

As stated, check the connector at the upper left, very common problem.

yea i think you're right i was confusing the window being closed for door..

Figured it out late last night someone had repaired a broken wire in the loom going from the body to the hatch. The solder connection was not very good and had split causing the wires to connect fine with the door open when the loom was not under tension. When close it separated causing the interment issues i was having.. just cleaned the wires resoldered the joint and shrink wrapped it seems to be working great now

Thanks for the info and quick reply's everyone
