Driving around today my 4Runner's temperature climbed high despite a well functioning cooling system. A combustion leak test detected the presence of exhaust gases in my coolant. Crap! A head gasket is blown.

I haven't decided what I am going to do yet. I have never been impressed with the 3.0L, so I doubt I will feel inclined to fix it.

As a new owner of a 95 4runner, are there any signs I should be looking out for to prevent blowing a head gasket?

3.4 swap with TRD Supercharger? or maybe the new 4.0 out of a 5th Gen would be cool. But yeah that blows I am sorry for your loss.

Oh man that sucks, did it give any signs before the temperature guage rose? Just hope it doesn't happen to me. Best of Luck man.

Thanks for the replies and well wishes guys.

Unfortunately I did not notice any signs before the head gasket went out. I was not driving hard or doing anything out of the ordinary, unless going to In N Out is out of the ordinary. Everything else on the motor is in good working order.

As for motor swaps I am severely limited. I wouldn't mind a 3.4L 5VZ-FE swap, but I live in Nazi California and almost any swap is met with more of a headache than it is worth.
