It went NUTS!

Sorry to start yet another thread. I have no idea what to call this one.

Started it this morning and heard a little squeaky-squeaky noise. I've heard that a couple times. Thought it was fan belts.

Usually there is a quiet hissing noise that runs for 10 seconds or so and is terminated by a pop (sounds like a relay) coming from the passenger foot well. Didn't hear that today. It's difficult 'cause the fan makes so much noise when it's started in the morning.

The quiet hissing noise runs again for a few seconds when I use the brake the first couple-three times, then it goes away.

Today the squeaky noise lasted about fifteen seconds then WHAM - it turned on the ABS light, the check engine light, both traction control lights and began screaming at me! I thought I had lost my brakes but they still worked fine.

Pulled it over. Shut it off. Counted to twenty and restarted it. The lights stayed on for about thirty seconds then all was normal again.

What is under the dash and makes that hissing noise? Maybe it needs some blaster squirted into it?

Any help appreciated :)

Sure sounds like the brake booster losing vacuum but ‘01-‘02 have an electronic booster so I don’t know if they tend to make that noise under normal operating conditions. The Christmas tree lights on the dash isn’t normal of course. The electronic brake boosters are big money, so hopefully that’s not your issue. Hopefully someone with the same year range can chime in and confirm.

Need to check for cracked hoses and vacuum leaks. Then go from there.

Maybe it's possessed?

It probably is. It might be about to go all Christine on him.

OP - do you have another vehicle? If so, your T4R might be jealous of it. I bought a Mazda3 as a daily driver, about a month ago. My T4R got booted out of the garage and sits outside, under a loving car cover (I still try to treat her right). When I removed the cover yesterday to take my dog for a hike, my T4R bucked and snorted when I cranked her. Then she ran fine. She was just letting me know that she didn't appreciate me putting her out to pasture. Oh, and her brake light on the dash now comes on intermittently, despite the brake fluid reservoir being full. She is probably just being passive/aggressive with me, as many women tend to do when they get jealous or feel scorned (or maybe I actually have a failing master cylinder or caliper).

The 2 questions I have for the OP.

1] Is anything getting fixed ? I have seen a pile of threads without any feedback or end results on any of them. They just seem to be abandoned.

2] Also please create titles to the issue at hand. For example: Its going nuts isnt very descriptive.

ABS, CEL and both Traction lights came on

Would be so much more descriptive.:]

For 2001's & 2002's all the lights turn on when you get a check engine light. Just check the codes at a parts store (the actual codes, not their amateur analysis) and post them back on here.

Yup that is what is does on my 01 runner. If the CEL trips the ABS and Traction Control do as well.

Agree 100% with Gamefreakgc need the actual codes being thrown to even think about finding solutions.

If no codes are present, you not going to find anything. :-(

Everything, so far, has gotten fixed, yes.

Thanks to all for the info :)

There are no codes. The CEL is now beautifully dark...

Great thanks for letting us know. Like others stated the cel kicks on the VSC and abs will disable and light up. :]
