It's getting tinted!

My dad came home and told me he's going to get my windows tinted Thursday! He said he's going to get the back windows darker, and then get the front windows tinted but not as dark as the back ones. I'm excited! I've been wanting them tinted since I got it.
How dark can they get those back windows without it being illegal? My sister had her Mustang's windows at 15% which is illegal. But.. my 4Runner's looks pretty dark already. Isn't there something that the police can give you so if you're stopped about you're tint.. they won't write you a ticket or whatever they do with illegal tinting? My dad's a cop.. so.. if he feels the need to do that.. I guess he can. I saw a BMW with really dark tint the other day. Like.. the windows matched the black car. It looked sooo nice. I wish I could get mine like that.. but I know my dad wouldn't go for that probably.

It probably varies by state. I think that in CA you can have the rear windows as dark as you like but there are limitations on the front driver and passenger windows and front windshield. My Camry has really dark tint on the rear window and rear passenger windows. The really dark tint on the rear window makes it harder to drive at night.

ummm, ask your dad?

I think you mentioned you were in Texas so there is a link for a Texas based site.

I'm getting mine tinted before the end of the summer but not as dark as you're describing. I have really bad luck when it comes to cops so I'm not doing anything else to get thier attention.

Just got mine done

In TX too. You can get any percent in the back, which can be as dark as literally painting them with black paint. I got 5% light trasmittence in the back to hide my sub and amp, it looks good with the factory glazed tint too. Then I got the front at 20% which looks good too. Its legal in TX.

yep, limitations on cali are 70% on the front. which, basically, equals, untinted..

wow, getting the rear darker.. i like the outside look, but for the inside, it's really hard to see, especially at night. i don't like going too dark with tint to where it hinders visibility. i've been in cars with 5%, crazy to go that dark..

but just run a search in a search engine for tint laws.. it varies upon state..

tints

I got my back windows blacked out on my last car. It was hard to see at night while backing out of the driveway. I have had my last four car tinted all around in Illinois. Have not gotten a ticket yet(knock on wood). On my 4 runner I left the back alone and got medium on the front. But the mediuim does not seem to match the factory toyota tint. When you get the fronts tinted make sure the tint matches. Toyotas is a little more blueish from the inside looking out, while the 3m I got was more smoked or brownish.

sharp4runr, in VA you can get the back tinted as much as you want. However the font have a 50% limit. The reason you can legally get the back done (passenger row & cargo area) is because SUV's fall into the MPV category. Which is any vehicle built on a truck frame (cargo vans included) can have their windows tinted fully. Or I am sure you have seen those vehicles on the road without any windows on the sides behind the driver, or on the back. We all fall under the same category. I had the windows on my last SUV. My Durango tinted to 5% on the rear and 50% on the front. However with my 4runner I decided to go 5% on the rear and 35% on the front. On my way home today another 4runner passed me and his front windows were even darker than mine. If you want to know where nearby you can get yours done let me know. The shop I went to, and have taken all of my cars to is great. It even comes with a warranty (as long as you get them within the legal limit, otherwise it is cash only and without a reciept/warranty.)

I would ask my dad.. but.. he'd question me about why I am questioning illegal tinting.

Actually.. I'm from Alabama. :-)
But I guess it wouldn't hurt me to do my own research. LoL

In Illinois I can't do anything to my front windows

i tinted my front windows an extra 35% to match the back. right when i left the shop, i passed two cop cars within a block. they both looked in my direction, but didn't pull me over. i haven't heard of anyone in the city getting pulled over for tints, but many of my friends have been pulled over in the suburbs. krosno, i think i remember you mentioning you were in teh schaumburg area right? i guess the cops won't hesistate there.

I live on the NW side of Chicago and I've seen many cars with tinted windows and I don't think that caps here pull over for that. I wonder how much is ticket for that. Anyway i think it looks great when front windows are tinted but there are more important things right now to buy for my truck (scion cd for example :D )

I had a friend in PA who got stopped for tint. It wasn't more than 20% I think, but even that was 'too' much. They ordered him to have it off by the end of the week and to stop by the station and prove it, no fine though.

Yeah man, if you want to PM me that shop name or phone number that'd be great. There is a shop near my work that does really good tint at a good price. My friend has had has last 2 vehicles done there. Hopefully the shop you send me is in the NOVA area :D

fit_of_vanity - See that shows I'm no stalker if I don't even remember the state you live in. It's Momo you have to worry about...

Just kidding Momo (cowers under the banning stick) :D

:jester: I have been careful not to ask to many questions, so that I don't catch hell from you guys. If you look at some old, old threads where there were others from Alabama, I asked where they lived and such. No offense to FOV, but I haven't asked detailed for these reasons. Not that I don't care, but don't want the appearance of some perv.:naughty: :jester:

Can't wait to see the pics of the tint.

Here in NYC, the cops are a PITA...they will give you a ticket for each window. In the past I got a ticket for 16%. City needs $$$

TINT LAWS FOR ALL 50 STATES

GILA Automotive Films has a current list for the US AND CANADA:
States that show multiples is an "either/or" situation. For example, in Colorado we can have 27% all around -OR- nothing on the fronts and ANY darkness desired behind the driver.

http://www.gilafilms.com/auto/car_tint_laws.html

Wow, in Alabama you can only "legally" have 32% net... I'm sure lots of folks bend that law...

As long as you are driving it like you stole it, they don't mess with you.

yeah...but they tend to like to give you metal bracelets that are connected together for doing things like that.... :p
