For the past several weeks I've been busy working in the garage...
About a month ago a buddy of mine called me and gave me a phone number of a guy he ran into who had a ton of Pontiac parts for sale. I didn't really need much as my 68 Firebird is a finished car. Not to mention that I just spent most of the winter installing a set of mildly ported Ram Air heads along with a more aggressive cam.
So for the Hell of it, I called the guy and he didn't have much but he said he had 2 or 3 motors for sale so I inquired. Long story short he had a completely rebuilt and modified Pontiac 428 for sale. His price was right so I grabbed it. For those who don't know the Pontiac 428 is a well known performance motor. Right out of the factory they were rated at 390HP and with some mods a lot more HP is out there. It's stroke is awesome for manual trans cars which my Firebird is. This one was rebuilt with performance in mind. It was bored .030 over with a set of ported and polished 6X heads, a pretty radical Comp roller lifter cam, roller rockers, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake and a tricked out Holley 850 double pumper.
There is a well known Pontiac only engine builder local to me. He is the guy who did the port work on my Ram Air heads. So I called him and asked him to check out my 428. He took it into his shop and checked everything over. He also fired up the motor, broke in the cam, and custom tuned it for me. He put it on his dyno and it put out 502HP at 5800 RPM. That's frigging nasty.
So I got the motor back from him and dropped it into my 68 Firebird. It's about 99% installed. Right now all that's not hooked up are my accessories. The motor is a 69 and my accessories are 68 so a few pulleys and 2 brackets have to be replaced. I ordered the correct parts on eBay and the motor should be running and driving next weekend.
I can't wait to test this baby out.
Here's my old 400 getting ready to come out..
Empty engine bay....
The new 428 ready to go to the machine shop...
Dropping her in...
In and ready to be hooked up...
As of this morning, the motor is in and about 99% hooked up. I just have to get a correct 1969 alternator bracket and water pump pulley and then we're running.
