Last year I was buying used heavy equipment for my company in Africa. Bought a little bit of everything - lowboy trailers, semi-trucks, water trucks, 40ft Cat generators, box trucks, buses, Bobcats, rough terrain forklifts (10k plus), a grader, etc. Was buying JCB, Caterpillar, etc. all over the world but mostly out of the USA and Dubai.
One of the requirements was to have a local dealer inspect the used piece of equipment and note any defects. The seller would then repair or have someone those defects.
Found a Caterpillar 10k forklift at rental place on the east coast of USA. Called up the nearest Cat dealer and told them what I wanted. I wanted them to inspect the piece of equipment for me.
Lady I was talking to is like "We don't do that." I'm like "Yes you do do that! All Caterpillar Dealers with a service department do that for a fee!"
She's like "No we don't!" and starts to argue with me.
I cut her off and said - give me the Service Department Manager.
He agreed with me that yes all Cat dealers will inspect used Cat equipment and worked up a quote.
2nd story. Before buying my 4Runner, I went and test a drove manual transmission Jeep Wrangler at the local Jeep dealer.
Seeing my crazy long Jihad looking beard, they gave me the new sales kid. I took a used 2016 JK Rubicon 6 speed out for a spin with him and told the kid what I liked and disliked about it. I really wanted to test a Willy's Unlimited Wrangler with manual trans and rear locker. The kid had no idea that existed.
If he was smart, he should've let me test drive a new JL Wrangler to show me the difference. No go there.
At the end of the test drive he thanked me for the education on Jeep Wranglers!
