Jack, tools and spare

I'm sure this has been covered before, my apologies, but this 03 is new to me and is missing a thing or two. It has all the stuff usually missing, like the books and OEM mats, but is missing the spare tire (completely) and the jack tools. The jack is in place.

Here's my question: I'm headed to a salvage yard today that has a 4R just in, complete, but wrecked. Should I get a full aluminum wheel/tire for the spare? I'm thinking it might oxidize under the rear and that a steel one came from the factory but just curious what others have done. A full size spare does fit, correct, not a donut???

Also, like I said, I have the jack but not the tools. Can someone let me know exactly which tools to get? I see the spot in the left rear cubby where the jack is and where the other stuff was mounted but I need to know exactly what's missing.

The 4runners came with a full size, same rim spare tire. No steel rims here! The tool kit has a tire iron.... to remove the lug nuts, and 4 long pieces you put together to lower the spare and work the jack. Here are some photos so you know what to grab.

I have a folding 4way too. Fits in with everything else and better than the stock lug wrench.

Many thanks to both of you. That's exactly what I was looking for. My bungee and jack are there but the whole pouch with tools is missing. I'll grab it.

Great news on the spare too. I'm quite surprised they give you a full size alloy. That speaks to Toyota quality. Everyone is ditching that nowadays.

Oh, by the way, I'll be carrying extra tools in this rig but I have a fascination with starting with things the way they should be. I'm sort of a geek that way.

As mentioned, the jack handle and jack handle extensions are required to lower and raise the spare tire. You can check on how that operates in the In Case Of Emergency section of your Owner's Manual - here is a link:

Thanks Bossman! I was going to refer to that to see the tools as well but haven't yet. A picture (like a real picture, here) is worth a thousand words.

make sure you spare tire lift mechanism is not cut. Somebody could of cut the end off and stole your spare. there should be a braided steel line with a big T fitting dangling.

Thanks Truckhigh, it's there. I got the tools today. Salvage yard guy gigged my for $20 for them but I guess that's not too horrible. I had to have them, to lower the spare easily anyway.

I found out today that only 03-09 4runner wheels will fit 03-09 4runners, because of the offset? In other words, no Taco wheels. I hope this was wrong. Someone please clue me in. I found one full set of newer 4runner wheels, even with better tires than mine, but he wanted $500 for the set and I couldn't swing that today.

Your 03 Limited likely has the 17 x 7.5J rims with a +35 offset (likely with 265/65R17 tires).

There are other Toyota rims (from the Tacoma, and FJ Cruiser and even Sequoia) that will be compatible in diameter and width, and be fairly close in offset.

You likely will not be able to go smaller than 17" in diameter because of the size of your brake calipers on the Limited model.

I think the 4Runner has the highest offset out of the trucks. You will be fine with any of the 6 lug rim. Don't get steelies for a spare, unless you want to carry spare lugnuts.

Tacoma wheels will fit on a 4Runner but 4Runner wheels will not fit on a Tacoma. My son has a 07 Taco with exactly the same size tires as the 4Runner, but the 4Runner has less offset and the wheels rub on the Taco brakes.

17" FJ and 5th gen wheels both have a 15mm offset. This pushes the tires out .6" over our 30mm offset.

I'm running FJ wheels on mine and love it, 5th gen wheels are a little easier and cheaper to find. I've seen a set of 5th gen wheels as low as $200 on craigslist
