Does anyone know if anyone makes a stainless exhaust kit that isn't loud?
I just got all new exhaust parts,
* Magnaflow stainless cat
* new o2 sensors
* JBA stainless cat-back
Well the o2 sensors and Magnaflow cat are fine. The Magnaflow cat is smaller than stock, so I don't know if it actually works as well or will last as long, but it fit perfectly at least, and the pipes are all 2.5"
But the JBA exhaust had a few different issues.
* First, the most trivial thing, it included some non stainless parts: all of one u-clamp, the nuts for another uclamp, the nuts for the o2 sensor. Ok whatever, no big.
* The hanger bars on the muffler come in the form of being welded to a u-clamp, and was welded so sloppy that the bar protrudes 3/8" into the pipe. I had to grind it down to preserve the pipe's round shape and proper seal, which ground that bar down to less than half it's original strength.
* The flange that meets the cat has a ring pocket for the gasket, but it's outside diameter is too small, and I had to grind away a severe chamfer on one side of the gasket that came with the Magnaflow. That results in a pretty thin mating surface on the JBA side because the gasket is only about 3/16" to 1/4" wide to begin with.
* In the flange that meets the cat, the pipe is only 1.89" ID !! The ID of the flange on the magnaflow cat is 2.58"
* Worst of all, and the thing I can't work around and just deal with: it's stupid loud! It's like a motorcycle. I *can't* drive this in and out of my residential street even if I wanted to live with it being that loud everywhere else.
The muffler is a smallish oval can with a perforated straight through pipe, with steel wool packed around it. What is the point of having a straight through design and having to live with that noise, when elsewhere in the same kit is a 1.89" choke point!
And to top it off, at the end of the tail pipe is a big chrome polished welded on tip, to make it *look* like 3" exhaust. I hate that show crap when it's fake. It's like a stick-on hood scoop.
Basically I hate this exhaust, and I can't put my old one back on because I had to cut it up to get it out. I could probably cut out the old muffler and butcher it in with adapting couplers and clamps, but the old muffler is rusted, the lengthwise seam blown out, and patched. I'm looking for a stainless cat-back kit that isn't loud. Does anyone know of one?
This is for '96 4runner, 3.4L, manual, 4wd.
