JBL and scion... Can’t live like this.

Gents,

I have an 08 Limited without Nav. I added the 2016 Scion radio, however am on my second Metre TYTO and I’m still having weird volume fluctuations. I was sitting in traffic yesterday with my wife and she asked me why my stereo sounded weird and I told her it was because the front speakers stopped working. I’m this close to either going aftermarket or just shit-canning the entire JBL system and running wires from my reg speakers. It’s a shame because I really like the center channel and the subs not really my thing, but it is nice.

Anybody get rid of JBL? Or what about aftermarket? Same issues as the scion?

I think I can shed some light on this.

I have he exact same model. 08 limited JBL w/o nav. I just bought the 4Runner and couldn’t stand not having Bluetooth phone or streaming audio.

I chose the Sony XAV-AX100 with a PAC RP4.2-TY11 wiring interface with a Metra 95-8210 Dash Kit. It’s all from Crutchfield. It looks stock and low key, but gives you everything you would need or want.

Here are a couple pictures of the thing.

I had big trouble getting it to work the first time because of the JBL system. I never found anyone else with this problem so I’m happy to describe it if you decide to get the same and run into it. The problem is that JBL amps need a signal to turn on and I had to call the PAC device manufacturer for assistance.

When you are getting it all plugged in and have no sound, you need to find the smallest flat-head screwdriver you can find and turn the gain a tiny bit left until you get sound, then turn right to your desired amount. It’s on the side of the PAC device and looks like a arrow inside a small hole.

Since installing I have had no trouble with it and love the thing. I also ran the mic that comes with it up my A pillar and people say it sounds great. Plus the thing comes with a connection for a backup camera which is my next project.

I don’t know what it is with mine, but I’m having volume surges and at times my front speakers will cut out for about 30 seconds. Pretty sure the scion radio is pioneer as well. I just got a 3rd TYTO. Maybe this will be the charm. Out of curiosity, did you set your JBL radio to almost full volume before hooking up your new radio? Supposedly you have to do that with the PAC. So I may try that.

It looks like regardless of aftermarket or not, I’ll need the metra or pac unit, unless I run all new wires and lose the amp base and center channel.

Technically all you would have to do is purchase speaker wire, right? As I understand it, you just run wire to the speakers in the door and then hook em up to the metra 70-1761.

My only big drawback is losing the sub and center channel. Even if I go with an aftermarket amp, my understanding is I’ll lose the center channel. Additionally I don’t want to have to run a power wire through the firewall because of leaks.

I did not do anything special with the volume on the factory radio. I used the gain adjustment on the tyto to set the volume
