JBL Problems

So I've been having problems with the single disc JBL stereo in my 2003 4Runner. The first problem seems to be fairly common... the unit just freezes and won't do anything. Even if i turn it off and back on, still nothing. The only way to correct this is to turn the car off and back on. I noticed another member mentioned that it was mostly a winter problem, and it hasn't done it since the temperatures were low.

Second problem is reception on this stereo. Anyone else have that problem??? I get crappy FM reception and NO am reception. Any suggestions?? What gives? Thanks.

For the reception part, see if both plugs are in for the antennae. The 4Runners have a diversity antenna in the glass in the cargo area. If one is disconnected from the back of the head unit it could explain your crappy reception.

Those units are POS. Mine (2004) wont play CD anymore. I'm getting aftermarket.

The CD player is the same in the JBL and standard units, but one thing that is different is the way power is supplied to the units. The standard unit with amp inside just uses power from the radio 1 fuse. The JBL unit runs power to the amp (in the rear of the vehicle) from the radio 2 fuse and the amp is on as long as the ignition is on, in other words all the time regardless of whether the HU is turned on. It sounds like you are resetting the amp by turning the key off and on. Maybe you could check the plugs to the amp.

Look at TSB AU003-03 on the 03 JBL system posted here in another thread. While under warranty you could have gotten the amp replaced with a different model one. There is a JBL 800# listed in the TSB but suspect its for dealers and applicable only while your vehicle was under 36 month/36k mile warranty. Mine still occassionally does same thing with the no volume/freeze. I don't have problem with reception but in a highly populated area. If someone calls the 800# would be curious to see if exchange is still possible. My rear seat receiver is out on mine too - not sure if that is tied to the amp or another issue - argh.

Do you have no power to the rear seat system? If so it's the 10 amp dome fuse. Otherwise everything comes from the HU at line level which is why you have to use earphones. Good luck!

Roger - no power to it. The dome light does work though - is it the same fuse for both or is there another? Assume they are in panel to Lf of driver behind door on dash? THXs.
