JBL Question

The JBL in my 04 lost most of it's power after about 18 months. I had to turn it up to the upper 40's just to hear it comfortably. The stealer said there was nothing wrong, but there definitely was. I just traded it for an 06 before I had a chance to throw a fit to get it fixed.
 
You hit the nail on the head ! I have to turn the volume up to the 40's just to hear it at normal volume. I'd like to hear of anybody having the same problem and had it fixed or knows what I need to do to find how to test etc... ANYBODY?????:awais:
 
same here i usually have my volume between 30 - 40, but my wife always complain is too loud. I guess i got used to the volume level
 
Wow, I usually listen around 20-25. At 30 it is pretty damn loud but thats also because I have a separate amp pushing 2 10" subs...
 
I wonder ,
I have the rear audio system, I think it is standard with the JBL upgrade. Could it be part of the problem ? Maybe ther is a big chunk of power set aside for it and is unusable fpr the main system ?
Whatever it is, I will dig until I find out and I'll post whatever I find.
 
Yep, same issue

I always have my radio between 45 and 55. I just assumed it was supposed to be that quiet, since it's been like that since I got the truck (used). If not, that would be great, because that's my only real issue with the truck.

Was that directed at me? If so, I do have the JBL 10 Speaker system. Originally with the Single Disc unit, but then I upgraded to the 6 Disc JBL unit from another member. Either head unit, I listened at the same volume levels.
 
sharp4run, When you mentioned additional amplification was installed, it was construed as a dissimilar system. I have the factory installed 6 disk JBL system. I believe it was an upgrade for the 2003 model year sport edition. I have not counted all of the speakers but I think there are 9 plus a subwoofer in the right rear cargo area. I bought the 4Runner about one week ago and have not had much time to enjoy tinkering. Could you hear any music with the volume set at 10 with either of your head units before you added additional power and more speakers?
 
Honestly I added the amp and subs only a few months of owning so I don't really recall. The amp is only powering the subs so I could easily unplug the subs and that would be the same as the stock system.

I added the subs because I felt the JBL system from the factory had perfectly good sound output for the mids and highs but the subwoofer was totally under powered. I had to pump the radio up to loud levels to enjoy any bass and at that point the radio was way too loud to enjoy. Now when I remove the subs just to haul some extra gear I always have to increase the sound levels.

I totally agree with the tweeter factor. Highs are ok ( especially in SURROUND mode) but when you try to adjust the fader to bring in more back seat bass you just loose more power and need to increase volume to compensate . In doing so, it seems to increase noise and decreases clarity. I may be asking this too early but, I need all of my cargo space with kid stuff etc... I wonder , did you consider / look into upgrading the factory woofer and amp within the existing side pannel space? Also, can I control a new sub through my factory head?
 
I researched here and the area where the sub resides isn't very deep so your sub choices would be limited. The factory AMP power all the speakers, so probably some rewiring will have to be done. With my current setup, bass is still going to the factory sub so when I remove my 2 subs I still have a little bit of bass. I think there is a product made by JL called the stealth box or something similar where it hugs the right hand area of the truck (above the wheel well) and it includes a sub. It was pretty pricey. Also another option is the bass link from infinity where the sub and amp is together.

I'm actually thinking of buying one 12" sub and then bridging the amp this giving me more room.

I had the same prob on my 03 w/the JBL surround. I remember there being a TSB for increasing the gain for the subwoofer. I used to have to crank the volume way up when on surround mode. The problem was that the amp is fairly small and is trying to push all 10 speakers. I could not find a better amp other than buying an aftermarket. I think that we are stuck with having to turn up the volume unless we go aftermarket. I have the diagram for the audio/visual components, PM me if you want 'em.

I disassembeld my truck looking for te components and found that the factory amp and the sub are located together on the right rear wheel well (interior compartment). Good Luck!

I will PM to get info. It sounds like a good quality slightly larger aftermarket amp is in order. Did you have alot of trouble disasembling/reassembling the interior? any reccomendations ? i.e.. specialty prybars, broken clips etc... follow factory service manual steps.... I saw manuals on EBay. I plan to get a set soon.

You know where to find it . Thanks a lot . That is ecactly what I needed to know . That space sure looks cramped. I am not sure now if there is enough room for an aftermarket unit to fit and properly breathe/disapate heat. Might use a computer case fan. I have a couple of freinds who live and breathe this stuff, I'll post final results. Thanks again to all . This is a great forum.

Tell us more about this TSB for the subwoofer gain. So you had this done? How did you get them to do it?
 
Once again, the same problem in a bunch of trucks... Someone must know what the answer is. Rear speakers way too quiet on the JBL premium system. Didn't the truck come factory with a rear speaker remote ? Could it be they're just turned down in volume ? Does anyone have this remote ? I've read about it in many articles about the premium sound system how it has a seperate remote for back seat listeners and wireless headphones. It's driving me nuts not hearing anything in the back. Changing the surround mode does not help any. The fader doesn't do the trick as the front gets quiet just to boost the rear and it sounds horrible like that. The front sound gets all weird like someon covering the speakers. Somebody help !!!
