JBL System Sound Quality

This may or may not be the issue as I haven't been down this road yet but did you raise all the levels before removing the jbl head unit? I have read that sometimes in order to get the output out of the factory systems in some cars you have to turn them up before removal. Otherwise its like the amps dont remember the real levels if that makes any sense. Anyway that's just a free thing to try.

Hopefully someone with the same issue will chime in soon.

Funny you bring that up because after a few days of dorking with it, I came across a recommendation to do this. So, I yanked the fracking car back apart and reinstalled the OEM h/u. I, then, tested it again while the levels were better, the overall performance gain was minimal. Frustrating, to say the least. Thanks so much for taking the time to post back, though!

Every vehicle I have owned since High School (it's been a long time and I grew out of the big speaker phase) has had a OEM Premium sound system. Brands I have had in my vehicles as OEM upgrades Sony (ex's Ford), BOSE (GMC and Nissan), Blaupunkt (GTO and G8 GT), JBL (4Runner), ALPINE (ex's Scion) and whatever VW used in 1998 Gti Vr6's. As far as our Runners go I am quite pleased with the JBL system (non-navigation unit). I did test drive one without and was not a fan. The JBL is a bit quirky though changing Sources or Modes (ie FM, CD, AUX). Normally AUX will give a cd like quality but I feel though the JBL sounds the best here. Cd's sound great and radio is fair. But if you're as much as a music buff as you say then you won't be using much FM radio. I have not had any of the negative issues except the speaker on my drivers door rattles sometimes with more extreme volumes. I also LOVE the fact that each mode saves the different Audio setting for that particular mode so you are not constantly changing to suit the mode you are currently utilizing.

If I had to rate the OEM systems I have had it would be:
1. GMC BOSE (best all around)
1.5 4Runner JBL (if FM was better it would be #1)
2. GTO Blaupunkt (only after I found the Sub pre amp adjustment knob)
3. VW
4. G8 GT Blaupunkt (horrible speakers great HU)
5. Scion TC Alpine (speakers couldn't handle it)
6. SONY

OEM, unless super premium is never going to be as good as a pieced together aftermarket system. I did have a Pathfinder with a BOSE system and it was awesome (for OEM)! It had the right amount of punch with crystal clear highs and mids. I like to hear the whole spectrum and not be overwhelmed by any one range.

The JBL with the OEM h/u did perform as you say. I have to agree with you. While the lows were not all that clear or throaty, they were there, IMHO. That said, I will definitely investigate further why my system is the way it is.

I like the JBL Synthesis, but it's not enough for my ears. The first few days it sounded phenomenal but then I got used to it and now I'm not super impressed. I do like surround sound and I wanted the JBL setup when I was looking for a 4r. I'm gonna upgrade all the speakers, h/u, sub, etc. but right now I have my money all tied up in my suspension. Compared to other cars, I think my JBL Syn. is pretty nice, but I'm always in and out of cars and IMHO I think these are the best: Burmester, Shaker 500, H/K, and BOSE.

I can't speak for the new silly looking Mustang but the previous body style's upgraded OEM radio wasn't to bad I didn't experience it to long though as I couldn't let any other GM people see me riding in a Mustang and it was only a V6 soooooo.....

True and thank you! But what year Pathy? My 01 BOSE was horrible! And the HU 6 disc changer crap crap crap crap. I went through 3 of those.

The V8 is phenom. The independent rear susp is incredible. Can't wait to track it. Should way outperform my previous car as it has wider and shorter wheelbase, lower, amd more powerful.

its garbage.. It maybe decent when it was new. I have a alpine 5600bhs. Used the stock amp to power everything.. im sure the speakers are shot. The oem amp is not enough to power my aftermarket components. and new 8'' sub.

I guess I tried to do this on the cheap. Now I have to order a new 5 channel amp, and skip the whole OEM crap. I hate to run wires and have an amp take up space. But it looks like either I do this or not reek the benefits of the aftermarket stuff I already have invested. P.S. I am not even a audiophile.

2) Curious as to why you want to replace the JBL system?

im beginning to hate my JBL system as well. I have replace every single speaker and the drivers and sub. It sounds great but the JBL system fades to the sub then comes back randomly. Its underpowered, i have to have the volume around 28-30 and 30 is near max for my Pioneer. its the only thing remaining on the actual JBL system is the sub. I want to grab a nice 4 chan amp and wire it up and finally get rid of the bulky wiring harness behind the dash. The system is 12 years old so im not shocked that its beginning to fail randomly.

Nice! I was told by several shops that it's going to be around 350 since I have the attached mirror. My uncle does automotive glass and could do it for the cost of the glass...if I were in Indiana. Arg!

The JBL needs to be replaced because after all of the troubleshooting myself and Crutchfield have done (including replacing parts several times), there are still hardly any lows coming from the sub. Most lows are coming from the front doors and it sounds like crap.

Wicked! What model of FlowMaster? What's the sound like at idle? Regular driving? Gunning it?

Trust me man.. Im currently single income and wife going back to school. So funding is joke.. I was on the fence for a while.. I did not buy everything at once. It was the Hu first. Then mids then sub..

The HU = 350.. Take the hit.. its worth it. pioneer 5600bhs
backup camera 20bucks
mb quart mid = 90 bucks
mb qt sub 70 bucks
amp is 140.bucks its 1000w amp.. but probably over rated. its probably 300w rms for the mids and 300w rms for the sub.

Which is way more than I need to run the speakers.

Ill probably turn the gain down a lot to reduce heat.

So in all I would have likely spent 800 bucks with the additional component speaker and wiring kit. I was on the fence about an amp.. but I saw this thread yesterday reading it I got frustrated and charged it on the credit card. I hate to do that but funds are low. with my motocycle and kayak Hobie. Its funny I have not been on this form for a few months and I did not spend anything on this truck. a couple hours of reading got me spending. :help:

I will hack out the gps system and see if I can mount or zip tie it this way.
If not it will go behind the rear driver seat.

My OEM subwoofer is still strong, but I'm still jamming to the hard rock of my youth (Def Leppard, Dokken, Scorpions), so maybe bass isn't as important to me as it is for people listening to modern music. My teenage sons seem to think vehicles pumping out enormous bass are the standard.

Geez! You really took the plunge! LOL! We are single-income as well. My wife and I have three young kiddos to tend to, so spending anything on the 4Runner is out of the question at the moment. I live in NW Houston.

I bought a JVC KW-r900BT after purchasing a few others that did not work right with the Synthesis system. It works well for the car. I had to add a few amp adapters and such, but all is working. Well, sorta. You know the rest.

Sorry for the flame post! Quoting a few posts this long would be far too long, y'all.

Pink Floyd sounds good on the JBL, not gonna lie. The highs and mids are great-- just missing the low-end punch. I don't want any of that high school punching. I just want to hear the lows as well.

lol.. id have to learn how to load youtube.. I actually bought the HU for the backup camera.. But wanted a large screen as OEM nav system.. I shop for deals.. but as always one thing lead to another. "its only 50 bucks more and I get a better unit" and same goes for everythig else.. I was going to buy a baby amp to fit in the glove for 80. then saw this deal and its can supply all 10 speakers and then some. I feel I almost have an addiction with online shopping now.. I should stop.
