JD Power DEPENDABILITY 2019

I don't put much faith in the J.D. Power dependability study. Don't get me wrong, I think Lexus/Toyota makes the most reliable passenger vehicles on the planet but I think it's laughable to think any of the German brands or American brands, especially Chrysler, are more reliable than Honda/Acura long term.

I see even Ford is ranked above Honda. I know one person that owns a new F-150 that is maybe 2 and half years old. He had to have the steering column replaced and also his passenger side door would not stay latched at times.

Chevrolet and Buick are ranked 4th and 5th I see. I know about 5 or 6 people that have owned newer model Chevrolet's and Buick's and all of them have had problems. The problems range from oil leaks and faulty electrical components to as severe as having an engine rebuilt on a Silverado with less than 100,000 miles. The Buick owner had transmission failure with less than 90,000 miles.

I don't know many people with German cars but I've read enough about their reliability to gather they are nowhere close to Toyota and Honda on reliability. I always heard that German vehicles were reliable until I did some research into it.

I used to be in the camp of "buy American cars only" but owning a Jeep was it for me. I had constant problems with it. I traded it in on my first Toyota and have never bought anything but Japanese vehicles since.

I would not put much weight behind these studies. They need to do long term studies of maybe 8-12 years or longer.

JD Power is pretty much just a marketing firm. They do all kinds of "initial quality" b.s. and the like. Scotty Kilmer sure doesnt like em either haha. I wouldnt trust a word that JD Power says

While no survey is perfect, there is a BIG difference b/w INITIAL quality and this DEPENDABILITY survey. This one holds a lot more water. The initial quality survey is pure crap.

JD Power is now a Chinese company. Kelly BB too. Data collected from Americans is power.

On initial quality, a complaint about gas mileage is treated the same as a transmission failure. Not much help.

I have no use for JD Powers, Consumer Research or any other such group. In hindsight, I've seen good/bad ratings for vehicles that in my opinion were otherwise.

If you are thinking about buying a particular make/model, find the most widely used car forum for that make/model. Search thru the threads for known issues. All vehicles have problems, but look for the wallet-killers..ie..frequently blowing head gaskets, transmission failures, etc.

Yes - this will take some time, but it might save you some grief down the road.
