It was a mud trail, my traction control got me through like nothing. He had some trouble getting through. I believe it was a 1998 wrangler. All I left with were a few pinstripes and a dent on the front skid plate. He broke something, don't remember what it was, nothing serious it was something off the rear bumper I think. And I do appreciate other SUVs, I'm just saying from what I've seen, heard, and read, the
4Runner is more capable than the H3 and xterra.

I will buy that. The 4Runners has a great traction control system. The 4Runner does as good better than my modified Jeep on packed snow.
I can easily see a stock 4Runner beating a stock jeep here.

Not sure what front skid plate is on a stock wrangler and the fact the wrangler is 13-14 years old I can see something breaking.

My father in law has a late 90's Toyota P/U on blocks. Things get old and break. The only thing to break off on the rear bumper are some plastic corners. Most call the milk jugs and taking the off is one of the first mods most jeep people do.

Either you are a good driver or your friend suck at offloading. Your 4runner clearances are far far inferior to a Wrangler. Not even close.

H3 alpha is quite a vehicle offroad...doubt that a stock 4th gen non-TE can keep up with one off the beaten path.

Believe it or not, I'm pretty sure I had more clearance than him. He was even saying in the parking lot before we hit the trails how surprised he was at the clearance. I did have the running boards removed, did that a couple days after buying it. I also had much bigger tires than he did too. Remember, both trucks were stock. And I forgot to mention I was trying to help my friend look for a Nissan Xterra a few months ago when he was looking for a vehicle. He wanted a capable truck that he can take on the trails and through the snow. I liked the idea of him getting an Xterra because I saw it as someone else to go trail running with. In fact, I have only been off roading with non-Toyotas since I got the truck and enjoyed having fun out there. I never saw it as a competition. But I did notice that my truck performed better or as good as the other trucks out there.

Well, i can assure you that a Rubicon or H3 Alpha will be better than your 4runner. Take a pic of your friend's Wrangler.

idk man, you would be surprised of the capabilities of a stock 4th gen. I know a rubicon would be better but I still think a 4runner will out perform an H3. Other than the H1, Hummers are overrated IMO. Also, I haven't seen the guy with the Wrangler since that day, which was in September. I was a tag along that day and only knew one guy who invited me.

Off-roading is about two things...the driver's skills and the vehicle's capability. Taking out driver's skills, what you have left is pure physics.

H3 Alpha has better clearances than a stock 4runner (approach, departure, and breakover). It comes with better tires (true all-terrain with 3-ply sidewall). Rear locker is standard along with traction control. Yes, it has a much weaker engine...but to compensate off-road, it comes with a 4:1 transfer case...so, off-road, in LOW range, it puts down more power/torque to the ground than any 4runner. And then you add in the rear locker & better clearances, the H3 Alpha is able to make the torque from the engine more useable.

Now, if the 4runner driver has good off-road driving skills, then you can make up for the 4runner deficiencies vs. a novice in the H3. However, given equal drivers, the H3 gets the nod OFF-ROAD.

I'm not picking sides in this arguement I just really hate hummers and the fact that they are way overrated! They're simply just overweight underpowered Chevy Tahoe's and I think the fact that they are no longer made is proof.

While all the facts that have been mentioned are true, I have't seen anyone mention how the H3 is heavier, taller, wider and has a longer wheelbase than the 4th gen which for the most part are things that can't be changed, where I can put a lift, locker and a good set of tires on my runner and then it will be superior in everyway. Not to mention the Hummers cheap build quality I wouldn't trust to transport a dog let alone people who are taking it off the beatin path. Just my 2 cents

Hummer H3 is actually based on the Chevy Colorado...even of lesser pedigree than what you thought!

Wheelbase may be longer, but the clearances are better...that is what matters. But, yeah, you're right about weight and bigger footprint.

But, if you're adding that much money just to bring up to H3's level, then an H3 owner can do the same and exceed what you just did to the 4runner.

Reliability certainly favors the 4runner. You're right.

I do get where your coming from as far as it being more offroad oriented from the factory, I just find more often then not, people think that they can drive up walls because there in a "Hummer". I guess in the end, like always, it depends on personal preference and opinons. And of the two SUV's you mentioned earlier, I would drive an Xterra before a Hummer but I just have a sweet spot for imports.

EDIT: Just an unrelated after thought....Its funny where threads end up. It started about COD Jeep and now were talking about Hummers and Xterras. Sorry OP for getting off track.
