JET Performance Import Computer Upgrade Package

I saw this on JET's website. Has anyone here tried this thing? I was wondering what kind of gains I could expect with K&N intake, and Borla exhaust already on the 4R? I guess you have to yank the ECU and ship it to them for a while?

Just curious here. Thanks for any info.

I didn't run a search, so forgive me if this is already discussed. I figured I wouldn't need to search this topic since the performance part of this forum is 99.99% about tires, the JET ECU upgrade probably hasn't been covered yet....

Waste of money and this has been proven on car shows and from people I know on the dyno and they are just a fancy toy to lighten your wallet and the return of promised performance is very minimal.

Oh. Ok, I guess I'll research deeper then and see if I can see some dyno info.

I know with my last daily driver (Evo VIII), a couple tuners offered this service, and they showed pretty good (20-40whp) gains on their dynos.

Any computer upgrade absolutely has to be combined with a dyno tune to see results in the useful part of the rpm band. Are you familiar with my setup?

Why in the world mess with something that works perfectly? The engineers have designed the fuel management system to give you the best of economy and performance. If you change things to get a few more ponys out of it then your mileage will suffer. If you want better mileage then the hp will drop.

Quite to the contrary I've dyno tuned my air-fuel ratio, which is primarily what any chip does, and I've realized more power and better fuel economy (a 1mpg increase over before tuning due to leaning the air-fuel ratio from 12:1 to 13:1).

Additionally, although the engineers have done a great job with the engine management software, I can't say the same for their choice of equipment. Gadget, a prominent Toyota truck tuner, has reported that Toyota uses, among others, O2 sensors that have an abnormally wide variation in reading, but are still consistent to save money. Wideband dyno tuning to a vehicle's specific equipment can not only increase power, but efficiency as well.

Just my $0.02 learned from research and experience.

Turbo cars are very easy to get gains. I had a $50 manual boost controller on my '93 Eclipse and I dropped a full second in the 1/4 mile with just that. The Jet computer offers no control but it just does what the MBC does by delaying the wastegate signal but for $300 instead of $50. it can also be done with a $5 fish aquarium valve but not recommended.

I also added a air signal modifier (Apexi S-AFC) and still spent less then $300 and had the ability to tune using my Palm pilot datalogger.

The Jet computer is a waste of money unless a few ponies and a maybe 1mpg gain but even that can't be proven to be consistent since around town driving will always skew your MPG figures.

Thanks for the input fellas. To answer one of the questions, yes, I am aware that ECU work should be performed on a dyno to get optimal results. I was just crossing my fingers and hoping for a quick few bolt-on whp. I will stay away from JET.

To comment on another post, I may be one of the few, but I really don't care about mpg. I committed to not caring the day I lifted this thing. I knew lifting it, combined with my heavy right foot would be a bad combination for mpg, I'm currently getting 13.2 on avg. In my epxerience, I've just become acquainted to high levels of boost, and now I want boost on my daily driver....I'm always looking for increased HP. It's a never-ending quest that I started on when I was 15. I know there's more of you out there that know how I feel.

I feel for you :(

To bad you can't supercharge it!! http://www.urdusa.com/index.php?cPath=1_2
none for the 4runner but it's for a 4.0, inquire!!!!

I contacted them about 3-4 months ago regarding that kit. He said it will work with the 4Runner. I just have to fabricate some custom intake piping. That's fine and all, because I know how to do that. I just don't want to pay $5000 for a kit that would be incomplete for my vehicle. If I'm dropping that cash on something, I want to install it as it's shipped to me. It's a principle thing I guess. If they would discount it to 4R owners since it's not complete for our vehicle, then I would seriously start talking to the Mrs. about something like that.....I still might anyway since it doesn't look like there are any other tuners out there stepping up with something for this motor.
