I called the dealer and their first quote was for a rebuilt rear diff, all new bearings and new backing plates. Not sure what the backing plates are though. Total including parts, labour, shop fees etc was going to be $1080. For rebuilding the existing diff was going to cost $700 in labour, plus parts. The tech said that this would be the riskier option because its impossible to say what condition the rest of the rear end is in.

Now here I'm paying about $95/hr for labour so your prices will likely be a little lower. I'm going to try to get other opinions around town and hope I can get a better price.

My pinion bearing noise is getting louder. Have any of you guys that posted in here made any progress?

I bought a Yukon Gear and Axle Master Rebuild Kit which has the pinion bearing and misc other bits but I've yet to get it installed. I've been meaning to get the axle bearings before I got the work done but I recently got laid off and moved so I've been neglecting the poor girl.

Planning to do the full diff swap using ECGS. Been living with the noise, doesn't seem to be getting any worse. Still not 100% convinced it's the diff.

esgs is reasonable and with an elocker you can swap 3rds, just pull the motor before you send it in. Zuk is another option and probably the best toyota 3rd member guy around.

If you are not sure that it is the rear diff, try a few things.
Is the noise better or worse under load/acceleration?
While cruising?
While coasting? (in and out of gear)

You can remove the rear driveshaft and drive around in 4hi. True the rear will be spinning but won't have a load on it. It should be quieter if it's something in the diff.

Noise is present while accelerating and decelerating. Under load and coasting. Engine on or off. In gear or out of gear. Doesn't change.

Pitch seems too high to be wheel bearing, which makes me suspect pinion bearings. However, there is no play whatsoever in the rear driveshaft at the diff. Beyond the rotational play, that is.

I've been wanting the try the disconnected rear DS trick, maybe this weekend.
