jiggle valve around the clock

my recent experience with it. (not a debate, just my experience)

i replaced the rad and added a remote trans cooler downstream. cheap green antifreeze was put in for the time being and the t-stat was tossed in. no idea of j-valve location. (i knew i was going to do the t-belt soon after)

when i did the t-belt and water pump, i drained the coolant, flushed with water and put in some good green coolant to 50:50 mix. The jiggle valve was installed at 12 o'clock.
the 4runner ran at 190F, sometimes 188 and sometimes 192, but stays at 190 for 90% of my driving.

i then stumbled upon a post on here about the correct jiggle valve location and realized one of two thing; A) i did it wrong. or B) it is the biggest misprint in history (like the saturn manual referring to an SC3 that was never made).

after reading all the posts about lowering the temp by TEN degrees, i decided to change it to the 6 o'clock location and see.

i now run at 188F, sometimes 186 and sometimes 190, but stays at 188 for 90% of my driving.

not quite the 10 degree difference that people talk about but there IS a measurable difference...

so take it however you want i suppose.

I don't doubt that it varies in reduction, but also to place my recent experience with this: New radiator installed by dealer 8 months ago, Toyota coolant, ran 208 pretty much around the clock, not driving it hard, 60 mph with jiggle valve at 12 O'clock.

Two weeks ago I swapped it to 6 o'clock and am running 192 in the exact same conditions as before.

the new rad and the flush was before i had it at the 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock position.

maybe having a one step cooler t-stat negates or limits the effects of the position of the jiggle valve. idk

all and all it was pretty neat. still baffled as to why/how.

Green Coolant

I just did the TB, WP, Tstat, Belts and Radiator. I used Prestone coolant in the yellow jug. I was debating using Toyota coolant but already had the Prestone. I called the number on the jug and they assured me this coolant is fine for a 2000 Runner with a V-6. Opinions. i did put the jiggler at the bottom.

Depends on how long you leave it. I'd say 25k it's fine, 30k+ you need the Toyota coolant.
