jl 1000/1, do i need a new alternator and second battery?

hey all, a wealthy friend has decided to give me 2 12w6's and the jl 1000/1 amp along with a capacitor for the holidays . i have a 2006 limited v6, and i was talking to an installer and he said that this amp really isn't good for electrical systems and recommended i get a new alternator and a second battery. anybody have any experience with this amp? is this installer just being incredibly conservative and trying to get my to buy a bunch of extra crap? or is it a legitimate risk?

It's definitely a real risk.

Are the lights dimming? If not then you are probably ok.

If they are then a new alternator might be a good idea, although they are expensive.

There is no way you should need a new alternator and battery though.

well i haven't actually installed it yet, so i don't know about the lights dimming. any suggestions for an alternative amp to power these 12w6s without the electronic strain?

alternator will be fine, i have more amps than u have , 2 300/2 and a 500/1, so its fine for the stock 4runner, but i did upgraded the battery on my ride to odyssey pc1700mjt, along with the big 3 wire upgrades. still no dimming and i play it loud all the time. u will be fine. wish i had those w6, my w3v2 is starting to get old and i need an upgrade , but i would use 2 1000/1 to power 2 12w6v2.

And Im running more than you on stock alt and stock batter and fine.

I'm going to say ditto, stock Battery (is a monster) & the alt can pump out plenty of juice all day long.

I've actually run my stereo for 2-3hrs without the engine running and have had no issues.

you MAY want to consider an upgrade to a deep cycle battery like an optima yellow top or an odyssey battery, but those are generally for folks running lots of power (winches, aux lighting, big stereos, linear amps for ham/cb gear, etc...).

couldn't hurt to do so for what you have, but there are lots of folks out there like the above posters running much more than you on stock alt and battery.

a second battery and upgraded alt is overkill for what you have received for your present.

i used to draw way more amps than that on a 3rd gen with stock alt. and single yellow top, with no problems.

so, against the installers advice, and with some of your input. i decided to go ahead and get it all installed. the problem now is that my lights do indeed dim when the bass hits... solutions? how bad of a problem is this?

I would do the Big three upgrade, that should help get more power to the amp, the next step would be a bigger alternator.
