So here's the goal... build a vehicle to go anywhere, handle any type of terrain, under any conditions. I recently moved to Utah from the east coast and am blown away by the different terrain this state has to offer. You have snowy thick forests in the Northern Wasatch Mountains, red slickrock in Moab, huge sand dunes in Little Sahara, and endless salt flats out towards Bonneville... not to mention it goes from 110+ under the hot sun in the summer to single digits with snow and ice in the winter. I need a vehicle that can handle all these conditions and still be capable of driving the 100's of miles in-between. So I chose this as my platform for the build:

Honestly I'm really impressed with just the stock performance both on and off road. Once I got some seat time in a 4Runner it was an easy decision to use one for my build.

Alright, lets get started. The most important aspect of this build is the suspension so thats what I'm starting with. I have already purchased a long travel setup from Solo Motorsports:

2/18: Installed a Rough Country 3" lift and front spacers to test ride height/wheel fitment. After getting everything on, I think I'm going to move the mounts for lower control arms, front did, and steering 1.5-2" forward and down before installing the L/T kit. Most people run 33's on tacomas/4Runners with similar 14" kits but with the 35's I want to allow enough room for proper up travel. That and with 10" C/O's instead of 8's and a little custom mount work, I may be able to achaive closer to 16" front travel with this kit. So compared to the pics below, the truck will be 2" higher, 2" longer wheel base, about 2-2.5" wider per side in the front and 2-3" wider in the rear. Also installed my Depo LED tails. Already starting to look good!

3/6: So I've been busy this week... The girlfriend and I drove the Runner (she had named it "Rusty Ralph") roughly 2k mi to Mexico and back for a wedding. It was a fun trip, Ralph made it without issue other than wandering due to a piss poor alignment job by Big O Tires. After seeing all those amazing desert roads driving through Arizona (this was my first time EVER seeing a desert being from New England) I decided it was time to install the long travel.

The day after we got back, it went under the knife. I started with disassembling the driver's side which was surprisingly easy. Nothing was stuck, even the lower control arm bolts came out with ease.

Since the driver's side was such a piece of cake I assumed the passenger would be the same. Man was I wrong... Every other nut and bolt either broke or had to be cut off/drilled out. It was a nightmare. Even my tie rods were completely fused together. Rusty Ralph was living up to his name.

The L/T kit uses upper uniballs so the oem ball joints have to be pressed out. Only issue is I left my press in Boston. So after a quick trip to Harbor Freight, I was back in busines. Oh and for the record, if your pressing out ball joints in the future, Dana 44 axle nut sockets are the perfect size for the receiving end.

Finally every stock part was officially removed and I could get the new parts mounted up. I had to twist and shorten my limit straps until I modify my new axles to achieve the full amount of travel. (No those are not the permananent shock or strap mounts, just mock-up) Since I went with a longer shock to achieve more lift, I'll have to temporarily mount it to the top of the strut towers instead of the bottom. Once I lower the steering components and front diff, I will be able to mount them normally. For now, I'm going to double up on the existing bolts and use 6 grade-8 3/8 bolts with lock nuts. Before everyone tells me this is a bad idea, think about the fact that there are only 4 bolts of this size that hold the lower ball joint to the knuckle torqued only to 37ft-lbs. So in theory, mounting the shock this way should be fine to support the weight of the truck at least temporarily.

3/12: Front suspension is on but I'm having issues with camber. Even with my lower bolts adjusted to the max, I still have positive camber on both front wheels. Finally I ended up calling Solo-Motorsports and they are going to send me their updated adjustable heimed upper control arms free of charge! These guys really stand by their stuff! Since that's getting squared away, I'm now working on a heimed steering setup. To get the height so I want out of the front end, I need to drop the front diff. A diff drop kit with an extra spacer and a quick modification to the rear mount should do the trick. Dropping the steering rack is much more difficult. So by switching over to heims instead, I should get enough angle out of the tie rods to accommodate for the extra ride height. Tomorrow my Tundra 13WL caliper and rotors should come in so I'll have that to do this week as well. Going to be a long week!

3/13: Did the Tundra 13WL brake conversion today. Picked up everything from Powerstop through Summit Racing. For $350, it's one awesome brake upgrade! Super easy to do, just had to trim the dust shields a little. Other than that, it was 100% bolt-on. The brake feel is amazing now! Did some steering bushings and a diff drop while I was at it.

All the parts showed up in less than 2 days!

3/24: Did some crawling/offroad stuff this past week and the biggest immediate issues I'm running into is rear tire clearance and not having a locker. The locker is easy, found one at a junk yard in Nevada and it's already on it's way here. I may do the 4.88 gears with the locker install. As far as the rubbing, it's only happening at full flex. I tried trimming over an inch off the quarters but it's still bad.

So now the question is do I try to clearance it a little more, modify the factory flares and re-install them to keep the factory look? Or should I keep cutting till they fit the way I want, weld in custom rear wheel wells, and modify some Tacoma fiberglass bedsides to fit?

I've seen only seen 1 3rd gen with those bedsides done, but it had trailing arms with coilovers going into the cab that was tied into a full cage, no cantilever. Pretty much a race truck the way it was set up. Very interesting "wish list" you have there!
 
This build looks like its off to a quick start. Looking forward to seeing the adventures it takes you as well as that LT kit.

Does that kit push the tires out for a wider track?

3.5" wider per side plus the additional with of the tires/offset of the wheels should put me at about 10" wider overall. She should sit somewhere around 80-81"

Pretty much a race truck the way it was set up. Very interesting "wish list" you have there!

Yessir. I know exactly what truck you are talking about. I originally designed the cantilever system for my old Tundra but with a few tweaks it should work nicely under the 4Runner. So far in CAD I'm showing possible rear travel numbers of close to 25" Should be fun if I can actually pull it off!
 
Most of the new builds here start with ebay lights or a transmission cooler. Your's starts with a stock runner on fins n things and a LT kit. I like where this is going.
 
Well... You're building exactly what I want to...

Idea that may not have crossed your mind, 80 series land cruiser rear axle; disk brakes with e-brake (which is often lost in a conversion), 1.5 inches wider on each side I think, ABS sensors plug right into the 4runner harness and the 9.5" is freaking huge vs the 8" rear stock in the 4runner. I'm anticipating using an LC rear end whenever I track one down.

I have a total chaos front +3.5 setup I got cheap for a tundra, but they aren't compatible with the 4runner... So I'm basing my design off of it but I'd like to run verticle heim upper and lower's instead of uniball uppers and stock balljoint lowers. Lot's of fab work ahead of me and it's my DD so the process will be slow. Need to get other bits and pieces of the build knocked out first.

RockenAlex sounds like you have your work cut out for you as well. Let me know if you need any help/advice. We can bounce some ideas off each other and help each other out throughout our builds.
 
**Update 2/18**

Thanks to a low budget lift and lots of cutting... I installed the wheels and tires today! Trying to test fitment. I'm thinking now of bringing the LCA mounts down and forward about 2" before installing the L/T to allow for proper up-travel. That will raise the truck 2" and extend the wheelbase. What do you guys think?

So you want to make a drop bracket essentially? Sounds like a lot more work than its worth frankly... I have thought about doing this sort of thing many different ways but with already having bought a bolt on long travel kit I think you'll just create a huge headache for your self for mostly minimal gains.

Thinking about this you'd have to move:
steering rack in some way
upper control mounts in order to turn since the lower/upper spindle pivots need to be on some kind of plain to turn
coilover mounts
front diff to retain 4wd
there's gotta be more... just doesn't seems super practical unless you want to go built from scratch custom.

After really looking at everything I couldn't agree more with you. I've scrapped the drop bracket idea. What I have decided to do instead is run 10" shocks instead of 8" but use about 9" of their travel. This will push the lower arms down enough to achieve the extra 2-2.5" of height I want and with the L/T, they won't be at an extreme angle. I'm going to modify the existing mounts for the steering and rear mount of the front diff to drop them roughly 1.5" and everything should work perfectly. If my measurements are correct, I may even achieve an extra few inches of up-travel in the process.

Sounds like an interesting alteration that may work. I too was looking to run a 10" shock as well. Can't wait for updates!
