What kind of LBJ failed on you? You only had it for a year?

It was an Oreilly master pro one.
But for a few months I did have a cv axle binding on the same time that could have been part of the premature failure.
I plan to replace the one on the other side under warranty then I will likely order some Toyota LBJ's.

Well my paint finally arrived yesterday. Now to blend it in with factory paint, one thing that sucks is I will have to probably remove my decal on that side, all good though I can get another set for under $12 shipped.

Really nice work on the winch project. That's something i'd do myself if i had a stock front bumper. It looks amazing to me!

Thanks man I appreciate it, I plan to have this thing for a long time, and probably pass it down to my sons to drive and play around with as well.

Oh for sure man, with proper maintenance and care, these vehicles would last forever. Being in the Midwest, I suppose rust would be one of your worst enemies. I don't know how well my sister takes care of her car out there in South Bend as far as winter maintenance and de-salting and stuff, but then again she doesn't drive much when the snow begins to drop.

So I am currently in a dilemma with myself.

Should I keep my 4runner and no car payment or should I sell it and get a tundra.

If I keep the 4runner I will probably put about $2,000 more into it along with painting it and bumpers and whatever maintenance comes up.
There isn't anything wrong with it that couldn't be fixed easily. I am just sort of wanting a newer car but I don't want a car payment.
Come on guys what should I do?

1. Buy and read the "Total Money Makeover" by Dave Ramsey
2. Put enough money into your 4Runner to keep reliable and fun
3. Save up and pay cash for a Tundra

I am mostly in the camp with 1da4 and 01KY4r. My 'new' vehicle is an '03. Everything else is '90s vintage, lol.

That said, it comes down to your needs and budget. If I had plenty of money and the retirement had accumulated enough I would likely buy something new(er). Also, the Tundra with a cap can tote a lot of stuff. That is also a downside from my view, the new ones are huge.

All comes down to your situation. Finances, family, future costs, etc...

I was in a similar boat. I could buy a newer vehicle. But that doesn't mean I should, or needed to. Not sure what you were looking for in Tundra's. But if you go used, you'll be spending that same money on maintenance as you would on the 4runner in addition to the vehicle.

I'd love to get a Tundra, but I agree with the people above, wait if you can, and put as much cash towards it as you can (cover it all if possible!) This is what I'd probably do, then save the 4runner for weekend warriorism But again, it comes down to your situation and what your needs are.

I'd tend to agree. I am in a similar situation with my 4runner, keep it, sell it, sell my other car instead, and get something newer, ie gx470. I like the 3rd gen and I get compliments on mine often when I am about. I cant really think of a reason to sell it except that its old (and id rather have a V8). it does everything exceptionally well, and its right sized for me.

I have the cash for a gx470, but its quite different state of mind paying 12-20k of savings vs, a monthly payment. I cant do the 20k, it just doesn't make sense as I would rather put that money towards a construction project. I might do 12k, or sell my car and get a gx.

I've kept my older vehicles mainly because they are rather perfect for what they are, and sometimes newer isn't better, its just newer.


edit: I should probably note that I have a fun car that sits in the garage most of the time. I've had it for some time and I went through the car phase when I got out of college.

thanks for this advice, I have actually been on baby step 2 for some time and the only reason I have a car payment now is because the wifes old Yukon kicked the bucket. This year our plan is to be debt free aside from the house. So the tundra would likely be the only debt. I have a small farm and live in the country but my idea was if I needed more power was to turbo the 4runner or find a cheap supercharger (something I have always wanted to do) and just buy another trailer, bigger to haul stuff.

So yeah I am on the fence but leaning toward keeping and just fixing on it.

my wife wont even drive it, my steering wheel shakes and I think its cause of the wheel spacers so new wheels/tires are on my short list for it.

This year our plan is to be debt free aside from the house. So the tundra would likely be the only debt.

Think about how close you'll be to baby step 3 if you keep the 4Runner. My wife and I have our 6 month emergency fund now and it's amazing how free we feel to not live paycheck to paycheck. We're in control and don't give up our freedom to our employers.

I really think you should keep it. I really think you should go offroad more. the tundra is amazing, but the 4runner will make it the same and 'easier'... less gas bill, less payment, countless mods..

why don't you just install a supercharger. that will make the truck feel 'new'.

Ok so i am 95% sure that I am going to be selling my 4Runner.
It has served me well for a very long time. I know many will say I should just keep it, but I have been there where I have a spare car and they just dont get driven when something replaces them So i will pass this one along to someone new who will hopefully take care of it as much as I have.
I have not posted it yet but will entertain offers on here.
Recently put brand new 33" BFG all terrains to replace the unevenly worn duratracs.
Replaced driver side wheel bearing and upper ball joint. Also in December I did the valve cover gaskets and all gaskets inbetween, yes the half moons too.
Before selling I will be replacing passenger CV, Upper Ball joint as well as both lower ball joints just with the masterpro ones i have cause they will be free under warranty and I want the new owner to have peace of mind. I will probably replace front and rear diff fluids as well along with normal oil.
So please shoot me any offers, or opinions on what you think I should be asking. most the information is in my sig.

Actually just under 234k right now. Will do TB before selling. Just replaced alternator with 80 amp and has new muffler. Will make someone a nice ride.

4Runner is officially gone as of 2 weeks ago and honestly I havent missed it one bit. I got a new Tundra Crewmax and it gets the same if not better MPG than the 4runner did! Yeah I got a truck payment but thankfully I have paid off alot of debt this year along with saving alot up and then making money on the 4runner allowed me to put a big chunk down! Its an investment and I already know that it will serve me well for a long time!
