Joelzy's 5VZ rebuild

The bottom half looks right. The larger one on the left (marked "???") also goes to the intake tube. A different connection than the front one. The tee on be back is interesting. It looks like the fuel pressure regulator size line but I don't think that's the location. I have a supercharger on mine and that changes things so I can't just open my hood and look. I'm going from memory... Let me see if I can scrounge up a vacuum line diagram. Or do you have one under the hood? That should list almost all of them

Edit: I found this picture in my supply. Doesn't show a tee so maybe that's cuz it's an option or something.

That diagram confirms some of my thoughts so thats good, also, I'm working with parts from this original 4runner motor plus some random parts from an automatic 2WD t100/tacoma(donor sludge motor) which is really throwing me off because i can't trust that i need all of the parts i have or know that i have all i need. The PO really just kept everything :redbrick:

Also, found it kind of odd that the 4R has heater lines running to what i can only guess is a second heater core for the back seat. wasn't expecting that but followed the lines and sure enough

Just took these yesterday when I started tearing down my engine.

That's a 4WD vacuum line on the early ('96-'98) 4WD's - it T's off the small line on the back of the manifold. The later ones ('99-'00) run from the front of the plenum and the latest ('01-'02) run an electrical ADD system.

There will also be a line down there around the ADD VSV's that runs to the vacuum canister in the front of the fender well. They get all T'd together down by the VSV's.

The line off the front will be for Power Steering idle-up on your truck then. There should be a line from the airbox or intake tube somewhere to a valve on the PS pump, then up to the front of the plenum there. It allows the engine to idle-up slightly when the PS system is under load. On later trucks it is handled by an electric switch in the same location on the PS pump and the ports are plugged or used for 4WD in some cases.

Update: glanced under the hood at lunch, looks like the PS pump still has the lines attached, score!
Also, found the hose that runs from the T to the 4wd actuator! saaweeet getting closer!

Alright boys and girls, im getting close!
Worked for a while today and made a PickNPull run because the PO lost the tensioner bolts for the PS pump and Alt. Got both from an auto with 4wd as well as some missing vac lines(mainly the manifold to brake booster)

Only a few more things to add before im ready for fluids and a cranking. Then i’ll weld the new rad support in and attach everything else.

I did run into this guy while running the harness so i’ll be needing a new reverse switch

Ohhh momma, weather-willing we’ll be cranking this weekend!

Found out the jdm fan pulleys are different from 4runners and luckily i was able to find the other. All belts on with new tensioner bolts compliments of a $3.81 grab at pick-n-pull which included several vac hoses.
Realized i used the wrong TB(newer tacoma) once i attempted to hook up the cruise control. May swap that out before cranking being that its easy to get to.
Otherwise its just installing the starter and battery then adding fluids before i’m officially ready to crank!

Hoping i can clean up some parts still once i make sure we’re all good.

Welp, after a long day, i got her going and running great!

Longer version of the story:
-flushed the heater core
-cleared the old fuel out
-swapped fuel filter
-put oil in the motor/trans/and TC

-tried mounting the slave cylinder that the PO just ziptied out of the way but could not compress it. So i pulled it apart and some junk was keeping it from compressing. Cleaned it and reinstalled with new fluid and it works but ill probably still replace.

-bled the clutch
-hooked up the battery

got power to everything but no ignition. Hmmm, tried jumping the switch and it tried to crank so its not the starter. I was about to start tearing into the dash when i found a little module with a blinking light... [emoji58] aftermarket alarm.
But with the battery hooked up it did seem to be working. Dug around and sure enough i found the remote that i didnt know existed yesterday and what the hell do you know? I disarm it, put the clutch in, turn the key and it friggin cranks!!! Amazing. Took a bit to get the new gas to the rail but once it was there it fired right up and ran strong! Great day

Got the new radiator support fitted and welded in today.

Fender and hood need a little adjustment still but came pretty close on the first shot. This was popped still but lines up pretty well so far.

Weekend was a crapshoot but happy to have had time to get this much done at least.
Still need to install:
-new slave cylinder
-shifters
-driveshafts
-radiator
-condenser
-lighting and grille

Then we’ll see about building a bumper

Worked on fitting the hood and fenders a little better and got it where i wanted it

Installed the driveshafts, a few other odds and ends in the bay and got my new headlight buckets and headlights in today. Everything could use a little adjustment but its pretty close as is. Grille is the most off thanks to all the broken clips.

Also had to fix the seat mount nut today as well when i realized the PO ripped the original out completely.

Up next, new AC compressor then radiator and we’ll be moving. Going to attempt my own bumper and after that, tires for the 16s, balljoints just to be safe and we’ll be set.

this same thing happened to me! I still havent fixed mine yet and am using a self tapping screw for now. glad to know im not the only one!

that was there when I bought the car. the previous owner did I'm guessing. not sure how. mine is cut up a lot more than yours though.

Exact same thing happened to me too. WTF. My nut still rattles around in there.
