Just bought a 99 SR5 4x4...

Found this checked it out and drove it, made the deal.

Paid asking price (non negotiable) and received $22,500 for an offer on my trade (2009 Nissan Frontier SE 4x4).

Asked how much they would take off my trade value if I was to keep the tires (265/75/16 Duratracs with 6k on them) and they knocked $200 off my trade.

So bottom line -

$22,300 Trade - $13k owed = $9700 - $8800 purchase price = -$900 that they will cut a check to me for.

No history on the 4runner, did have the timing belt done at 94k, dealer installed new brakes all around, new anntena, battery, and a full detail. The 163k is kinda scary, but it is a one owner vehicle. All vin tags present on all panels and no sign of paint work. No dents or scratches that I could see. Local Oregon truck.

Has all books in the glovebox, interior is clean.

Oh, and has the rear diff-lock.

It did have an issue when I was leaving, it would crank, start and stall. Did it a few times but it was extremely low on fuel and I am hoping that was the issue. Also had some front end shimmy on the freeway on the way to work, tires that are on there are somewhat worn (have not swapped mine over yet) so that may be the issue. They have a 5 day/250 mile guarantee so I will keep an eye on it.

What do you guys think?

That is a nice find and it must be real nice to be out of the payments. I am originally from Gresham, where are you from that you were 45 mins from Wilsonville?
 
Sounds like you should be re-writing that $900 check out to toytec :D.

So with that many miles what should I expect?

I am thinking I may just replace the radiator just because (read about too many pink milkshakes)

Drain and refill tranny, t-case, and diffs. Plugs and wires.

It has a factory 6 disk in dash changer that doesnt seem to want to play CD's so I will probably just replace with aftermarket. I was trying to drive while playing with it so I may mess with it more to see if it works.

Anything else I should do for prevenative maint? My last vehicle before my Frontier was a 94' Cherokee with 150k and was always having issues. Hopefully this one does not do the same thing to me...

I havent searched around much, but any fluid recommendations? I believe the rear axle needs something special due to the locker.

Yea, thought has already crossed my mind. I am thinking about going with OME stuff. How much more lift should I expect since its a 99' and sits a little higher than others?

You gotta think it has sagged a little after 11 years or so, so yeah probably right around 2 inches lift then.

Looks like a nice runner! I would definitely have it checked out by your own mechanic before the 5 days/250 miles to make sure you don't have any major issues. Have him give it the once over and check everything. I had the front end shimmy at about the same mileage, and had to have the rack and pinion replaced for $900.

I would just bypass the tranny cooler inside the radiator and get an aux. tranny cooler. There's been a lot of recent threads on this and how to install it - it's way cheaper than a new radiator and easy to DIY. Here's one recent thread:

I think the 4runner will be a much better vehicle for you.

I like Amsoil. The rear diff doesn't need anything special, just drain and refill.
 
Nice find, and awesome deal on the trade. I also recommend the aux trans cooler. i did mine for <$50 (got a cooler out of a 1ton dodge at junkyard for $20) As for the shimmy, check the steering rack bushings, Mine were shot at 130k, its also a cheap fix $30ish if my memory serves me correct.
 
No pics yet other than whats in the Original ad. Other than the 265/75 Duratracs they swapped over today it looks the same.

Speaking of that, just got back from the final signing. It took them 3 hours to swap the tires over, but it was well worth it. The Toyo's that were on the runner were crap. Driving back on the freeway I havent noticed the shimmy that I did yesterday.

They wrote me a we owe for
1) fix shimmy (if it still exists)
2) repair /replace CD player
3) lube hinges

Goes back in Monday at 2pm to get the above figured out, and all was worked into the deal.

There has to be a catch, I only paid $22,200 for the truck in May of last year. They gave me $22,300 for it on trade after they gave me my tires back, otherwise it would have been $22,500 (figured the tires were well worth the $200 hit considering they only had 6k on them)
 
Dude I looked at that same Runner last Saturday! It was still in the back lot, hadn't been detailed yet or anything. I passed because of the mileage, but ended up buying another '99 at Beaverton Toyota. Did you see the '01 Gold Limited too? I got all excited about that but then realized it was 2WD. Anyway, good luck with your 4Runner!

I think so, it hasnt done it since and I've put over a hundred miles on it. It was really low, I believe the gas light was on before we even took if for a test drive and it was parked on a hill when it stalled.

I think the 2wd was sold, I didnt see it and I was there for 4 hours wandering around the lot waiting for the great tire swap.

How did mine look before it was detailed? Either they did an exceptional job or it was fairly clean when it was traded in. When I went and looked at it wasnt even on the lot yet, just got done with detail and was waiting for a spot on the "line". I am sure if I didnt pick it up it would have still gone pretty fast.

Yea, the mileage sucks. I really like the truck and wish it had lower mileage so I could keep it longer. Oh well, if I could get at least 50k out of it that would be good. I generally put less than 10k a year on a vehicle so in that case it would last me around 5 years.
 
If you take good care of it and maintain it properly it'll run forever. It's common for Toyotas to get 3 or 400K, I wouldn't worry about 163K.
