Just bought a Manual 4WD 88' Runner for $100

I'm beyond excited. The guy I bought it from says it has a bad head gasket, I saw on eBay where I can pick one up for pretty cheap. Also came with an extra set of tires and wheels. I will post pictures tonight. Bought it at lunch on the spur of the moment type thing. I've been wanting one of these convertible types for a long time! Just thought I'd share.

As far as body not horrible but not that great either. It needs cleaned REALLLY bad. Basically the guy got a DUI so it's been sitting in his back yard for a year. I would have inspected it more but when he said $100 I couldn't get it out of my wallet fast enough.

I will post a lot of pictures after work when I get to go pick it up.
 
Alright, it's a lot more rough on closer inspection that I thought at first. As you can see in the pictures the cover is off and there is almost for sure dirt in the engine. There is definitely water in the oil.

Am I better off replacing the head gasket/resurfacing the head if it's warped or just buying another motor at a salvage yard somewhere?

Man that's a pos. Hope you're good with a wrench. lol.
I would probably just buy a new engine. At least you only paid $100 for it. The metal has got to be worth more than that at the scrap yard.
 
Alright, I need some help. I changed the oil, filled the radiator with water, charged the battery but when I try to start it, it just does a single click. When I turn on the headlights the dash lights get dim. So I figured the battery wasnt charged enough.

So then I tried to jump start it and the same thing happened. Is it a bad starter? Any other possibilities?
 
Try giving the starter some taps with a block of wood, or lightly with a hammer and try again.

Wiring could be struggling as well.

Starter problem

There are two sets of contacts in the starter and the + side wear out after many years. The good news is you can buy the contacts from the dealer for $20 and rebuild the starter. I don't have the part numbers here but check this board or http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/Starter.shtml or YotaTech. It's a simple repair and way cheaper than a new starter that is likely not as good as the factory one.

Bad news: just tried to crank the motor manually and its locked up. Not looking good at all.

I'm trying a last ditch effort involving wd40, I'm not holding out much hope. Ill keep you posted.

Let some kerosene or marvel mystery oil sit in the cylinders for a couple days. Ive heard of that doing the trick before.

Buttt.....22res can be had for cheap. I would just throw another motor in it.

I was just squirting some wd40 into the cylinders. I have some kerosene laying around would that be better?
 
This 4Runner is in the same terrible condition as my first FJ40, mud and all, but now I feel like I got rooked when I bought it for $200. :)
Have fun. New motor may be in order, but a complete rebuild would be more fun.
 
The guy I bought it from is notorious for being hard on equipment. I'm just afraid he overheated it to the point of fusing the rods in place. Really holding out hope it's just rust holding it in place.

Where is the cheapest place to pick up a 22re?
