Just bought an'06 and have empty cargo panel

Hey guys this is a total noob question but I'm going to be up all night if I can't figure out what was in the panel on the right hand side of the cargo area that has a couple straps. Mine is empty and it's driving me nuts. Thanks for your help

I also have a 2006. Mine had a hitch ball mount in it when I purchased it used. It was still on a plastic bag. Looks like it came with it new.
 
That's where the Mr. Fusion machine goes to power the flux capacitor.

So yours is empty? Dang, that's too bad.

I guess that means you have to buy gasoline instead of running your 4runner off of trash you can find anywhere.

it would be nice if there was more container'd cargo area in the back...

indeed I do. damnit.

its always irked me that our highlander has MUCH more storage space in the back, AND the spare tire is inside. its insane. storage is very much lacking in my 4runner.

Which is a terrible place for it.

Think about it: You're on your way to Grandma's house in a snowstorm, packed with kids and all your stuff in the back, and you get a flat. What do you do? Oh, yes, unload all your stuff onto the wet ground so you can get your tire out. Then, when you're all done, put your nasty, filthy spare tire back inside the storage compartment where the snow, slush and dirt will lay until you wash it out.

On the 4runner, the spare tire stays outside, where it belongs. And after you're done changing the tire, you can put the flat tire in the space occupied by the spare where, again, it is not inside dirtying up the interior.

This is a bad thing?

no, my point was that the tire is stored inside, and there is STILL more storage than with the 4runner.

I will trade a little bit of dirt and hassle for the satisfaction of knowing that it will be there, and I can get it out. Nothing worse than trying to lower a tire that is rusted up and you can't get it down or worse, going to lower a tire that has been stolen.
 
The reason the 4runner has less space than the highlander is because the 4runner is a body on frame. If they had a unibody, they could have a lot more space.

Be thankful for your lack of interior space, the alternative is worse!

Is it a full sized tire, though? I thought most crossovers nowadays had those crappy little donut tires that are good for maybe 25 or 50 miles if you're lucky.
