Just bought my first T4R

So I just purchased a 1999 White SR5 4runner 5 speed Manual 4wd with 190K miles on it for $3,000. It has been running regular 5W-30 and I want to switch to Full synthetics. What are your guys thoughts?

From what I read you shouldn't switch. With that many miles the seals are use to the regular oil and it can cause leaks. Might be total BS but I'm just going off of what I researched on it. I'm in the same boat 186k and was going to change to synthetic but I think I'm just going to run regular oil in it.

I heard a couple people say to use the Blend type Quaker State Defy 5w-30

My dad's 22RE was all original with 490,000 miles when he sold it. He always used Castrol GTX. That's what we use in our 4 current Yotas.

I converted from standard to full-synthetic @ 145,000 miles. No issues for the past 20,000 miles. I change my oil now every 5-7,000 vs. 3,000 miles. (Converted engine oil and transmission fluid.)

I ran a blend for 2 changes and replaced my valve cover gaskets (they were leaking a bit) before switching to mobil 1 synthetic

Pretty much just buy walmart supertech synthetic unless i can get something else cheaper with rebates

Switched over to synthetic Mobil 1 on my last 4runner @ 186k. Will be doing the same with my 240k 4runner I just purchased.

Synthetic will be fine. 180k miles here and have been running synthetic since I bought my '02 @ 120k.

IMO synthetics don't cause leaks, crappy old seals do. if the synthetic oil caused you a leak it was because your seals were crap and the smaller molecules of the syn. were able to pass through.

I run synthetic amsoil throughout, Signature Series 5w-30 in the engine.

IMO the benefits of running a synthetic oil make it the clear choice for me.
