Does anybody recognize this 87 4runner? I just picked it up and wanted to see if I could get some info on it. This is our first "rock crawler" and I don't know much about it.

Here is what I do know...

87 4runner
5 speed
Dual gear box (I think that's what it is called)
39.5 Irok Super Swampers
Billstien shocks
Fuel tank is relocated to the bed

My wife and I plan on redoing some of the suspension and axles at some point in the future. Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have dual transfer cases.
When you said dual gear boxes I was thinking dual transmissions which some people have actually done

Beadlocks are something I would like.

What gears in the axles?
I have never seen dual cases mounted using the stock crossmember before. You should consider a budbuilt crossmember, you will gain 2" ground clearance and less hang ups.

Is what you mentioned all the specs you got from the previous owner?

yup...I am new at all of this! LOL!!!

I am going to cruise around the driveway and try and figure out what each lever does. Obviously I know the 5speed. But the middle on has 3 different places to shift to and the furthest back has 2.

The middle case will have low range/neutral/high range

Rear selector will have 2h, 4h, n, and 4l

How much did you end up paying?
With a few changes truck is a good base

$2500 is a decent price if everything works. The Iroks, beadlocks new would be about that.
It does have potential. Like any thing it is going to be a learning experience and a few thoughts of what did I get myself into, been there a few times myself.
Depending on what part of Texas you are I believe the Texas chapter on TTora.com is pretty active.

Any idea who built it?
What brand/size of winch?

I have no idea who built it. It was purchased from a guy who was selling it for a guy that owed him some money to pay off some of his debt. So the guy I talked to didn't know much about it. And him and the previous owner are not on good terms anymore.

I haven't looked at the winch, but it has the smittybuilt xrc hawse fairlead on it.

As far as I can tell everything works except the top light bar. But the wiring in there looks to be a bit of a mess.

Biggest problem I see is that it's on 39" tires and you have no idea if they are stock axles!

Keep the solid front Toyota axle tube just upgrade to a better axle shaft inside them and you can handle up to 400hp on 40" tires with those tubes just some armor and gussets and it's a great axle

Yeah...that's what I have been told. I am going to get it to the shop at some point and start looking at options.

So I finally found the previous owner's for sale thread on the 87. The only difference I can tell is the tires are now 39.5 Iroks.

Here is what he had in the for sale thread on tx4x4.org

"Full Exo cage .120 wall tube. The rockers are .250 2x3. Top still comes on and off. Trail gear front and rear bumpers. Smittybuilt 10k winch with synthetic rope. Leaf springs all the way around. Fits 37s perfectlyy at full flex. Fuel tank has been relocated to inside the cargo area. Still has all the seats.
Running 37x12.50r17 Lakesea tires. Soft compound that provides plenty of grip. They have a lot of thread left. 17" bead lock wheels.
Front axle has trail gear brace, six shooter knuckles, long field axles, drive flanges. Hydro asset. Crossover steering with soild tie rod and FJ ends. Spartan locker with 5.29 gears. V6 big brakes. Trail gear diff gaurd.
Rear axle is a V6 axle with 5.29 gears and spooled. Has trail gear diff guard.
Factory 22re engine, 5 speed trans (clutch is about 2.5-3 years old).
Dual transfer cases, both have factory gears.
Has been to shilogh ridge, trees offroad ranch, Hidden falls atleast 5 times, and just made a run at K2 in mason. Never leaves me stranded. "

Although I'm not a fan of exo cage, you just stole that truck for $2500 with all that goodies, literally.

I agree, make sure it's got 30 spline Longfields, Dirty 30's or RCV's in it before wheeling it.

But I disagree on the axle can handle 400hp on 40's. I've been on 40's for 8 years now and have gone through 5 R&P's, two rear axle housings, and one front housing all with a 22RE and a dual ultimate crawler setup (2.28x4.7). 8" ring gear is the weak point on the axle. The next weak spot is the housings themselves. I'm sticking with the 8" diffs for now but upgraded to Trail Gear Rock Assault housings. The stock housings are wet floppy noodles compared to a fabricated aftermarket housing.

Out of curiosity...why don't you like the exo cage? Looks or functionality? This is our first built rig, so I am new to all of this.

Personally, I think it adds unnecessary weight to the truck and makes it top heavy. I prefer light rigs if I do rock crawling.
