Just got an 02, a couple questions.

So I just got an 02 4runner, its got 220k miles on it, but they were mostly road miles, I bought it from my Dad who is the first owner. The first thing is the check engine light comes on and we took it to the dealer, they say its the gas leak sensor, and occasionally I can smell gas a little from outside of the vehicle after driving. So we had them check everything, they cannot find a leak or anything, they replaced the gas cap and the tube that connects it to the tank. So that was a few weeks ago, I started smelling the gas again and then yesterday the engine light came on again. Does anyone have a clue about whats going on?

OK second thing, the drivers seat is squished from my dad sitting on it for 220k miles, is there any way to swap the driver and passenger seats, they look fairly symmetrical.

No clue about the gas issue. Get the code (Pxxxx) and then google it. Might give you some ideas.

You can swap the seats, or sort of. The recline handles and such won't be on the right side. Take a look at this. It's not for a third gen but it should give you an idea of what you're in for.

The gas thing shouldn't be an issue, I've smelled fumes on mine for a while now when I start it up in the garage or outside and no check engine light for me..

obviously there are some gas smells from starting the engine, the smell is stronger than when I fill up at the pump, and it only happens after driving for a while. Oh also just so you know taking off the roof rack improves the highway mileage a good amount.

You can easily swap out the bottom cushion of the seats. take the the seats out, remove the plastic side panels and there are 4 bolts that hold the buttom cushion to the seat frame. I swapped mine out recently because I was getting a little bit of wear on my drivers seat.

Have you looked into a leaking fuel pressure regulator? They would give a raw fuel smell.

Ok so I took it down to the dealer again, the guy smelled the gas coming from the same spot that I did, in the front of the rear wheel well on the left side. He suspects its the pressure overflow valve getting stuck open on the gas tank. Im assuming its the thing that allows the tank air in and out when fueling up and guzzling gas. and to me that sounds about right, because they tested it before for pressure leaks and there were none, so maybe the valve is getting stuck open sometimes. anyways ill look into the seat swap thing after I take care of this gas smell, maybe itll get me better mileage too if the gas is evaporating out of the tank.

Oh btw do you have a thread for your full led conversion?
