just installed new RV 270 H/O cam 22re, Timing question?

alright its all in and runs good and everything but i don`t have a timing light, i just set it back to where it originally was, it does feel a bit different from the original cam, they said it would take away from my botom end a bit but i haven`t felt much, i do know it powers alot ferther threw the power band, it used to be once i hit about 4000-4500rpm id run out of power, now its pulling all the way to about 5500 to red line. I don`t know if it is timed correctly right now but if it is i was wondering if advancing the timing would add a the hp? And if so which way is advanced and wich way is re**** and how much can i add to be still in safe zone thanks! any opiniions or whatever are welcome

I would go to harbor freight and pick up one of there timing guns for like $30.

But as far as your particular advance is concerned, not sure what it should be.

It's ok to try and time it by ear to get it running, but I wouldn't reccomend that you try and tune it for performance by ear. Get a timing light and set it to 5 degrees BTDC and call it a day.

ok cool, i still got about a month and 1/2 before it goes back on the road, ill try an borrow one, i might one buy on ebay if i can get a good price, is their different grades of timing light? like can you set different options i seen a thew with digital screens a settings you can put into them, what will those do?

You won't need anything other than a basic inductive timing light, the fancy digital ones have features that are mostly useless for an owner of a 22RE. Go as cheap as you feel comfortable with, they are all pretty similar and all should work equally as well for your situation.

yha i know i probably won't need that for THIS vehicle, but i might for another thats why id like to get something thats good for even later model vehicles, id just like to know what the functions are on them and what they do thanks

On most later model vehicles the only way you can affect timing is by replacing the timing belt itself. The on board computer actually manages and controlls the setting of your advance or re**** at all times while your motor is running. Also if it has OBDII you can hook almost any code reader and it has an indication on it for the advance or re**** (I believe its under a monitor mode)

All a timing light does is pick up on the spark and flashes. I would not buy one of the crazy ones with all the features.

some are for 2 cycle and 4 cycle motors
