Just moved up to the 4th Gen

Let me preface this by saying I love my 3rd Gen. I put a lot of upgrades into it and it never let me down. The only problem is the power it has for towing. 4 speed automatic on the 3.4L V6 was no fun when hauling a 3800# PUP. On up hill climbs I was either running less than 40 mph or dogging it to get it up to 50 mph. This is kind of scary when you are on a 75 mph highway so I decided it was time to look for a V8. I considered the 1st gen Sequoias, Tundras, and of course the 05+ 4th gen 4Runners.

Most were severely over priced here where I live at the dealerships so I decided to bide my time until next summer but on a whim I did a search earlier this week and found my latest Toyota addition. A 2006 SR5 with towing package. 2WD, base setup with just enough goodies to make it perfect for what I was looking for. White even, one of my favorite colors on a vehicle. The dealership priced it at $13900 with 132K miles on it. Clean car fax with no accidents and only 2 owners from northern Texas. I test drove it and the suspension was smooth, transmission shifts unnoticeable, and the V8 had no problem getting up to speed by the time I was merging into traffic. Prepurchase inspection at the Toyota dealership (not the place that was selling the 4Runner) found a dirty air filter and low coolant level. The place I bought it from had just replaced the timing belt and water pump, did an oil change and topped off all the fluids. I take it in next week so their PDR person can fix the hail damage I pointed out on the hood. They took my 3rd Gen on $3k in trade and then gave me a 2.25% interest rate (seriously!) for 6 years (I plan on paying it off before then but wanted the payments low for now).

I spent most of last night and today ordering parts I need to get it setup similar to my 3rd gen. Window visors, sun blocker, Prodigy P2 brake connector (love the fact that I won't have to wire up yet another vehicle for towing), new dash kit and wiring harness for the Pioneer HU I am going to swap the stock out with for now, dog cover for the back (came with 3rd row seats but I took those out), and the Firestone Coil-rite Air helpers for the back springs to help with towing.

So to compare them directly here are some of the things I think the 3rd gen did better than the 4th:
  • 4 x 12V sockets (3 in the front one in the rear). Going to miss that when trying to run a Garmin and charge my phone at the same time up front.
  • Auto windows on both fronts versus the driver's side only on the 4th.
  • Not auto window on the rear. Every time I try to open it just a bit for venting the 4th gen keeps rolling the window all the down or up.
  • 4x4. Going to miss that feature when it snows but to be honest it's only a handful of days a year and I rarely did any off roading that required 4wd.
  • No power seats. I constantly have to readjust to unlock my kid and the 4th gen power seats are sloooooow.
  • Lift gate latch is a real latch. Not the silly, sticky electronic one the 4th gen has.

And now the things I think the 4th Gen does better than the 3rd:
  • HUGE glove box and arm rest. Seriously, everything I moved over from the 3rd gen doesn't even fill either half way full.
  • Cup holders all over the place. Front, mid, and rear.
  • V8 power with 5 speed automatic. When I go in tow mode I will have 4 gears to use and more power for up hills so I won't feel so bad.
  • Bigger. The 4th gen is wider so more space to spread out.
  • Nicer seats. They still have padding.
  • Smoother ride. At highway speeds the 3rd felt jittery on uneven surfaces even on new struts and tires.
  • Grey interior. Not a fan of tan interiors so really digging the color change.
  • White exterior. I live in a desert and Emprial Jade Mica = hot as F' in the summer time.
  • A real towing package. I had to add an external transmission cooler, new radiator, wire up the 7 pin harness and brake controller, and add a stage 3 hitch to the 3rd gen to do what came with the 4th gen. All I had to do was order a connector harness for the brake controller. Yay!
  • Frosty cold AC! Yes, my 3rd gen had cold AC but the one on the 4th gen will give you frost bite in the summer and the mid row vents actually blow cold air so we won't have to aim the 2 mid vents back on the kid. 3rd Gen only did heat.
  • Much better range with the factory alarm remote.
  • Projector lens and LED brake lights. I had to retro fit the 3rd to get decent lighting. I do plan on upgrading the lens and move to HID bulbs but for now the stock is more than good enough.

Some more finishing touches include a DD head unit, back up camera, full window tint all the way around, DVD entertainment center for the mid row and some better tires when these wear out. For now I have 2 weeks to get the 4th gen ready to tow on our next camping trip.

Sorry for the crappy phone pics but I have been sick most of the week. I plan on taking better ones later.

These 2 drive me bonkers.

You can add some USB ports to help with the charging situation
Oh, I like that idea. Very nice.

After reading that though I will run a fused 12V line from the battery and use a relay that switches on from the power plug to keep from over loading the fuse plug's fuse. I've had too many bad experiences with aging automotive wiring and have spools of wires just for these types of projects.

You will really love the V8. You are also correct that the 2WD is good on road. My sons and have been in snow even in Colorado without any problems. Keep good tires on it and with the wider track the truck is very stable.

Been trying that but haven't found the sweet spot yet.

It's finicky because I think it works off how long you hold the switch down more than how hard you press it.

If it feels sticky/stiff try getting a tooth pick or business card and cleaning gap between the switch and bezel as they can become filled with gunk (I took my bezel out and removed the switch and cleaned it, but I'm a bit CDO.)

You'll learn to hate the cup holders in the center console...

I agree with all your 3rd v 4th gen comparisons, but found a nice way to deal with. I kept my 3rd when bought my 4th!

I'll be taking the console off next weekend to install a new stereo head unit so I will clean it then and see if that makes any difference. I will also try short taps to see if that works as well. I got it to work once this morning and thought I had figured it out but couldn't repeat the success later.

Actually I like the cup holders on the 4th gen center console. I can fit a Gatorade bottle in it snugly or just move the center divider over for small cups. But I guess time will tell in the end. And I already have 4 vehicles and an RV to park so keeping the 3rd gen wasn't a viable option for me (sadly).

On a separate note I did not realize how improved the suspension was. I just drove up a washed out, wash board, dirt road and was blown away by how smooth it felt compared to the 3rd gen. I will always miss my 3rd gen but the 4th gen is certainly taking most of the sting out of the move.

And has anyone tried converting their steering wheels to ones with controls? Just curious to see if it would be worth the hassle.

After some experimenting I think you are correct. I can tap the switch and it stops just fine but if I hold it down for more than half a second it starts rolling down.

So today I took it back to the dealer. The new water pump they had installed was still leaking coolant so they are going to have their mechanic work on it first thing in the morning. I have to say this is the first dealership I don't feel I am getting jerked around. Nice to know some places like this still exist. Of course they are a family owned dealership that has been around for 40 years so I guess that says something (that and one of my in-laws used to work there).

Yesterday I installed the window visors and wired up the brake controller. Today the new hatch switch cover and window blocker came in. Tomorrow will be the dash kit, wiring harness, dog cover for the back (80 lbs white lab/great dane mix), and the Firestone Ride-rite spring helper kit. I am going to be busy this weekend to say the least. ;)

I moved from a 3rd gen to a 4th in April, and have to agree with your list. The center cup holders are horrible, but the main thing I have to add to the list - it drives me nuts that you can't just flip the wiper arm up to have it clean the window once. Every Toyota I've ever owned has done that...until now. Wish there was a fix for that.

But, overall, love my v8, especially for towing!

Oh, and you can also buy the "smokers kit" replacement for the part of the center tunnel where the one 12V socket is - that then gives you two. Easy swap - just did mine tonight.

I think I am going to do the USB plug mentioned earlier. I like how clean that looks and accomplishes the same thing. But thanks for the suggestion. Didn't know about the rear windshield wiper though. That's going to be annoying.

I got the 4runner back today. The dealership traced the coolant link to the line that goes from the intake to the water pump. Then when the mechanic was pressure testing the system he noticed the radiator was weeping so they installed a new one. All at no cost to me. So I now have a new timing belt, water pump, radiator, coolant and oil and I haven't even touched the engine yet except to top off the wiper fluid.

Just waiting on the new cabin filter and stereo harness to arrive before diving into the weekend's list of projects. Between now through next week I will be driving the 4runner and checking coolant levels while looking for leaks. Love the power of the V8. Makes merging so much easier.

Just swapped out the stock head unit for my 2 year old Pioneer MVH-X560BT. Nice to be able to use Bluetooth and USB again. Can't stand listening to broadcast radio any more. Of course this is only a temporary head unit.

I installed a Joying HU in my MR2 a while back and love it. Android 4.4.4 and it runs stable with all my loaded apps. GPS navigation, DD touch screen interface, can act as a WiFi hotspot when paired up with my phone. Bluetooth hands free calling and music. Runs both my amps and music is tuned by PowerAmp app that was worth the $5. All that for $260. Blew my DD Pioneer out of the water and I paid $400 for that unit.

They now sell 5.1 versions and I will be getting one of those in a couple of months for the 4R. Then a backup camera that worked great on my 3rd gen to go with it. I know the price point seems scary but if you want a computer that runs on Android and comes feature packed then it's a small chance to take. Joying offers a 5 year warranty, has awesome tech support, and a US based warehouse. Updates to maps and firmware are free as well. And no I don't work for them. Just a satisfied customer.

Curious to know what specific Joying unit, back camera, and any harness you plan on using? Is it on Amazon?

Joying had their own website and the units cost less there. Wait until the Chinese new year and they have a pretty good discount.

It comes with a harness that wires up to the usual kits you can pick up on Amazon. The camera I like is a Boss camera also sold on Amazon. When I get in front on my computer I will post up links.

As far as the head unit I plan on ordering their 7" DD Android 5.1unit that doesn't have the DVD player. It comes with navigation, Bluetooth, microphone, and all the usual trimmings. Maps come loaded on a microSD card that you can remove and put a larger SD after copying the maps over and store movies, music, etc. Just make sure you are familiarity with with working with Android for firmware updates or goto their site and watch the videos.

You might have to modify your brackets and dash to get it to fit properly but I doubt it if you are in a 4th gen or newer. For my 93 MR2 I had to tap a hole on each side of the unit to be able to mount the brackets and then shave the lower part of my dash to get it to fit but most installs seem to plug and play on the newer cars.
