I have the wrangler AT/D2 i think...in 265/70/r16...i like them a lot! i felt a HUGE difference from my old tires...more traction, and takes those S's nice 
I also HAVE driven in rain and on water, and theyre great, unless you WANT to slide, you CAN! I've done it a few times
and when I leave from my schools parking lot, if I hit the turn right, I can burn some MAJOR rubber I don't do it anymore, I just did it when I first got them to break them in

Drove around on unplowed roads that had 8-10 standing inches of snow on them and the Runner handled exceptionally well.
Supposed to get a complete snow & ice fiasco tonight and tomorrow so this ought be really good again.

We have some hills that change a few hundred feet elevation in less than a half mile or so and frequently get snow/sleet/ice/rain lines as you drive up them. I am sure that was part of the problem as well.
These tires handled like a champ. I recall my 1991 4Runner was the same way with an original set of General Grabbers. However, my 1998 GMC Sierra stunk in the snow, even after I put a set of Michelin LTX A/Ts on them.
