Just Rebuilt 22re for 87 4runner 2.4L non turbo....no power need help!!

Ok, heres how it goes....

Recently rebuilt my 1987 Toyota 4runner 22re 2.4L non turbo engine 5speed,
Head was machined and rebuilt, new front cover, timing, oil pump, water pump, spark plug, gaskets.

Engine started up but has no power. I cannot get it to idle properly without bogging down and stalling out, when i mash the gas peddle to the ground, i get full power in neutral, when its in gear it has absolutely no power, i can get to about 20-30 mph in any gear but not any more than that.

All the vacuum lines, harnesses and sensors seem to be correct. I tried adjusting the throttle cable and idler screw on the throttle body but neither worked.

Does not seem to be any vaccum leaks, all appear to have good pressure, tried spraying the engine down with starter fluid to check for a leak/idle spikes but nothing....Adjusted the distributor, doesn't seem to be that neither. It has good gas, fuel pressure seems to be right. I don't believe the fuel filter to be clogged....

Please offer suggestions, i am stumped and need your guys help!!!!!!!

As i try other things/user suggestions ill add the results to keep things up to speed.

You might want to pull the valve cover, check your timing marks on the cam sprocket and compare to the #1 spark plug firing position on your distributor. While you are there, check your valve lash.

Yup, verify your timing. Make sure your cam and crank are in sync, then verify you stabbed the distributor correctly.

Then make sure your fuel pressure is good, a clogged filter can cause trouble vaguely like you're describing.

Did you say the idle screw doesn't work at all? Or did you just mean that adjusting the idle didn't fix your problem?

agreed. sounds like the cam timing is off a tooth.

MAYBE 2 teeth, but I think the valves would contact the pistons at 2 teeth off. plus, it might not even start.

Just rebuilt my engine and had to adjust the timing a few times to get it right. Areed

I'm surprised you didn't check timing, you did everything but that!

Check the timing and make sure everything is aligned properly and check the valve lash like the others mentioned just to be sure, it sounds like the engine is out of time to me.
