I just checked their website and they have one available, so hopefully it shouldn't be too long before we see other manufacturers with them. It was just released today!

33-2438 - K&N Replacement Filters, Replacement Air Filter

Well its about Frickin time. I have e-mailed them about 10 times in the past 3 months. And, according to the web site, they were to e-mail me as soon as the product came out. So much for that promise. Good Job Captain, thanks for sharing.

Thank you for the news; however, anyone know what the true word on these filters are? Good or Bad?

Meaning, I have put these filters into a few past new vehicles of mine only to have service mechanics practically yell at me that I should have NEVER put these CRAAP arse filters into my vehicles. I cannot remember exactly why they said this, it was something about letting too much air in and throwing the balance off between the intake and exhaust and burning up the motor prematurely. And yes they seemed to be very very irritated about the use of these filters.:shrug:

I think they are a better filter than stock but that's just my opinion. As for burning up the motor because the mixture is off that's just nonsense. That's why our cars have computers and multiple sensors now. Sensors monitor the air/fuel mixture, exhaust, throttle position, temperature, you name it, to give you want you need, when you need it.
 
I've had them in rigs before, but not this one. Unfortunately there is no proof that it filters better than the OEM filters. Yes it breaths better, and yes it may add 3.2 more HP or something, but I've heard it allows particles into the engine which could be bad.
 
If your concern is causing a problem because it isn't OEM product, you could wait for the TRD filter to be released......I'm sure it will come out sooner or later. Toyota stands by TRD products. I don't think it is a problem, K&N has a great reputation for quality and research behind the product. Now the question is if the cost is worth the benefit?

I don't see cost being an issue...you can run the K&Ns for a long time, just needs to be cleaned. I think that they have priced the filters to kinda match changing the OEMs on a regular basis.

OEM or not isn't a big issue either, I've just heard a lot of people go through engines quicker because of the K&N filters. The cause is that in order to breathe easier allowing for the increase in horsepower, they need to flow better. Flowing better results in more particulate matter getting into the motor and could cause a number of problems in the long run. I know they have a huge R&D and stand behind their product, all I'm saying is that if someone wanted to keep their rig for a long time it may not be the right choice.

All that being said, it probably won't make a difference for HWY or Road driving, but dusty, offroad or wheelin type scenarios, it would allow more to come in.

I do agree...wait for TRD to make a filter.
 
The nice thing about the K&N's is they coat the mass air flow sensor with oil which trips the computer. Toyota will clean and reset the computer for you for around $100. Happened twice to me. I trashed the K&N and went NAPA Gold. Mechanic did fuss at me even though I had not oiled the filter in over a year between MAF sensor cleanings. YMMV

The 1st time the mule kicks you its the mule's fault...
 
The problem with K&N is the oil. If you over-oil the filter just by a smidge, your MAF (mass airflow) sensor gets covered in the oil and in turn causes your engine to run poorly.

Either buy an aftermarket filter that doesn't require oil, or be very, very conservative with the oil on the K&N when you clean it.
 
You can't change the laws of physics; freer flow than OEM means bigger holes, putting more air into the combustion chamber, increasing the bang you get from the air/fuel mix, but at a cost... you will get more particulates in to the combustion chamber, too, because of the bigger holes.

K&N makes filters for racing, not for daily drivers. People who go racing do not care about multi-year longevity, they care about performance. They build cars to cross the finish line, not get 300k miles. In a dragster, it only has to go a 1/4, in the Daytona 500 it only has to go 500 miles, in the Baja 1000... you get the point. When the race is over, the engine gets a complete rebuild so it doesn't matter how much the K&N filters out because it's all getting redone anyway.

TRD filters do the same thing btw, for the same reasons. I'll be sticking with the stock filters because I don't really care about beating some guy in a race. I want my 4Runner to get 300k miles.
 
There is no better FILTER than a paper one.

Reusable filters allow more air but at a cost. They are racing filters.

No one can feel a 3HP gain...

What is the difference between the K&N & TRD filter? If I remember right they looked somewhat similar (ha ha, not just because of the shape either)

I had a K&N in my old SUV with 150k, never missed a beat or had any issues.

The concern was about warranty issues and Toyota backing up the product. Personally, I think K&N research is better than TRD's. That said, I have a TRD CAI with oversize filter box on my Tundra and have no issues at all. If the filter is serviced correctly you are not going to have any problems. Yes, a 3 HP difference is not a big deal either, but multiply a .5mpg improvement in fuel economy over say a 150,000 mile life span and see the $$$$$ you could be saving to pay Geico for your auto insurance.

i had the K&N intake and filter in my 94 toyota pickup for years and i finally traded it in for the new 4r after 280miles and it was still running like a champ
 
I've been running K&N for a long time now and there maybe be better air filter like S&B and AMSoil K&N is a good product if you service them correctly. I remember we had a guy running a K&N air filter on his 24v cummins and NEVER serviced it. he was wondering why his truck was running so poorly. well basically the filter was clog up to the point he need a new filter. K&N and TRD are basicly the same they are both oil based. AFE makes the TRD filter and they have something call PRO dry S. AEM has something similar.

As an update to this thread, I just went into the local Toyota dealer today to pick up a few parts and spoke with the two guys at the service/parts department desk. They said not only do they see vehicles come in with the mass air flow sensor being messed up but if you roll in with other engine troubles and they see that you have a K&N model air filter installed they will COMPLETELY VOID your engine warranty. Beware of this.

I see this EVERYWHERE that people are so worried about a dealership "voiding their warranty. Listen folks: there is no such thing. It's like people who run around with "full coverage" insurance. It doesn't exist! Know your rights!

It's a little piece of legislation knows as the Magnuson–Moss Warranty Act.

Look it up! Read the entire thing!

Do you have anything to back this up? Seems like you're making a lot of assumptions about the physical properties of a filter. Why does it have to be bigger holes? Couldn't there just be more holes?
