K&N air filter ???????

I don't see how the Volant CAI works. Looks like it gets air from inside the engine compartment which is hot. Is there a connection to pick up air from the inside wheel well like stock that we can't see? Otherwise, it's not much of an improvement over stock. Might be even worse than stock.

to clarify....
Um, dudes, i removed the top cover of the air box so you could see the filter system and box inside.... the airscoop from the fender well provides the air flow into the box... not inside the engine compartment....

I have run K&N filters in other cars before. Pending on the vechile it did give marginal MPG and HP improvements. The best improvements where on carb motors. Newer EFI motors tend to have a pretty efficient air cleaning system, unless you mod them substantially.
For a vehicle driven on road it should be not too bad for the engine, but for a vehicle driven off road I will not put it in my 4R in a million years.
I have noticed that it does let dirt through in cars driven on road, I have not even dared to try it offroad.
Here is a guy that went through the trouble of testing the filters to see what they let through.

I think in this forum or YT there was a guy that put it in his 4th gen 4R and complained that the secondary carbon filter (for emissions on the 4R) was full of dust after using the K&N.
So I have this challenge for everybody with aftermarket filters in CA, put them in, oil them etc etc. Lets take pictures of the air intake systems before. I will use the good ol' Toy filter. Then we go wheel in some real dusty stuff (hmmm maybe a good way to get to Death Valley and some other places, can even do some Pismo dunes) than after after 10k we take off the filter and take pictures of it and the intake systems. Do the white glove test on the intake and see what was going through the system. You will be amazed how much gets through oil based filters or if you oil it up enough it will be clogged before the miles are done. Either way you will find it very hard to meet the balance OEM guys do with their filters, especially the new Toy filters in the 4th Gen.

That would be me. Great for the road but a POS on the trail. It's like the K&N filter wasn't even there. I've been running K&N filters for years, not any more. Absolute crap!

There was a filter test that I saw on the honda forums when I had my civic. I can't find it, but I found a japanese version here : http://mkiv.com/techarticles/filters_test/1/index.html. Basically you can see the dust that passed through the various filters on the white round pad. From the test, the APEXi filter was the best.

TRD will make an air filter now that the new 2005 Toyota Tacoma uses the same 4.0L V6 engine the 04-05 4Runners do. I will be purchasing one as soon as they are available. I would suspect also that Toyota's TRD dept. will soon be making lift kits and other off road accessories available for us 4th generation 4Runner owners. Yippee-Ya-Yaaah!

I am new to this Forum, and I love the lively discussions taking place.
I own a 5spd 99 V6 SR5.
I have used K&N filters in all of my cars and have complete trust in them. And as a scientist I can tell you that the numbers and the logic of the cited scientific test do not hold water. The K&N is not letting in 224% more dirt and notice the amount of max dust was higher as tested for the K&N than the stock. We need more information to make a case here against K&N, specifically I would like to see analysis of the flow of the dust going in and the what was captured simultaneously captured on the membrane.
Is the K&N worth the money? It is if you consider the replacement cost of stock filters over the lifetime of the car.
Does it add noticeable power? No, its not a significant mod, it won't add noticeable power. My 4Runner is a 5spd and the K&N definitely makes it breathe better past 3K RPM's. It use to be starving up hill after 3K RPM's. Since the K&N it just sucks more air and climbs. I'm not passing suburbans uphill in 5th gear but the car sure breathes easier and holds its own.
