K&N Oil Filter Leak?

Howdy,

I changed oil and filter ~3500 miles ago. This morning I drive a few miles, park and upon returning a small oil puddle! I added 1/2 quart and this looke dlike baout what leaked so it just started.

I get home and look and the oil filter is leaking around the seal. I use K&N as I like that wrench on/off. I got a socket on it and was able to easily spin it a 1/3 to 1/2 to tighten it up.

As far as I can tell the filter actually loosened up after 3000 miles!

Weather has been basically mild with high 30°'s to 50°'s and today the first time I drove when the windshield slightly iced. Could this cause it?

New filter and oil change = no leak so far but still a little rattled. I was driving long distance and if this happened mid trip….

what brand of oil filter to use is almost as contested as what type of oil to run.

That being said, I have found that certain aftermarket filters will leak over time. Something about toyota using a round gasket, while most aftermarket filters use a flat oring.

I have gotten into the habit of using OEM toyota filters and haven't seen a leak in awhile.

Just my .02 cents.

Make sure you run a bead of oil around the seal before install. Hand tighten till pretty tight then do a good full turn. Over tightening can cause the seal to crack I have had this happen with oem filters. I actually reach down and hand tighten my oil filter just in case every time I pop hood.

Just need to find that balance between too loose and too tight. Too loose and it leaks (like you found out), too tight and you'll have a heck of a time getting the old one off!

I would also check how tight the oil filter post is, I just ran into this with our V6 Tundra Parts truck. They apparently loosen up over time/high mileage on the 5VZ-FEs and cause the filters to back off; something an older coworker mentioned to me. Just get a 12mm Allen wrench/socket and make sure it's snug/tight before tightening the oil filter down.

Yep I'm all about OEM but I also like to be able to change the oil in 15 minutes! Toyotas seem to glue on and are tough to get off.

I have not found a good filter wrench that gets off Toyota filters easily. Not even room to stab with a screw driver! I've tried the band and cup like filter wrench but nothing as simple as the K&N wrench on and off.

I'm wondering if these are just more prone to loosening. Like I said it was fine for 3000 miles and I think it just popped this cold morning.

I've used every brand and been changing oil filters for 30+ years and never had this happen.

I use a strap wrench to remove the filters. It's one size fits all. And I make the filters as tight as I can by hand.

I agree…OEM is best…I've seen this..

But for me the hassle of getting off a filter was too much.

I'll try the Lisle filter wrench and perhaps give them a try again.

K&N are pricey but Autozone tends to have a special every couple months that includes K&N and Castol/Valvoline for ~$30.

my k&n just started doing the same

I preferred the K&N filters for the same reason....easy to get off.
However, I had a horrendous intermittent leak last summer from a K&N filter. I didn't know what was causing the leak, so had a local shop put it on the lift. They said it was the filter. The tech said the filter was tight when he took it off.
Must have been some crud under the gasket? I never knew, and have gone back to the OEM filter.

This is what I have and how it's used. If you can't put the ratchet on like shown a 3/4 open end wrench will get the job done. I've used this on more than just oil filters.......

Didn't read the whole thread but k and n did have a bad batch of filters for ours. I discovered mine immediately after my motor swap. Basically they weren't threaded deep enough so they max out torque wise before it threads.

Took mine back to advance and we checked all five they had in the store were the same but to different degrees of how far the oil filter bung would thread into it.

I might have posted the batch number in my swap thread I can't remember right now.

Wouldn't have expected that from whoever makes the filters. Back in my road racing years if my 93 ZX7R had a Fram oil filter on it it wouldn't pass the safety inspection.

Guys yeah wow, I make contact and 1/2 turn. Take them off by hand. If you over squish rubber, it will deform.
