K&N's AirCharger

JGRIMBALL: I have the Borla Exhaust on my V8, have you noticed any change in the sound of the exhaust when driving on the highway? I haven't installed my AirCharger yet...

I spoke with a tech guy at K&N today about the AirCharger. Right now there is not a FIPK kit available for the new 4Runner's, only the AirCharger. The AirCharger will not pass a smog test if you live in one of these areas. The FIPK system, when it becomes available, will pass a smog test and is essentially not any different from the AirCharger system.

You have a FIPK system listed in your signature for a V8, meaning you ordered one, are planning to order one, or will be getting one?

If you got one for the V8, where did you get it from? Thanks for all the input. . .

JGRIMBALL: What I meant was since I installed my Borla dual exhaust, driving on the highway can get anoying sometimes because of the exhaust hum. I was wondering if installing the AirCharger makes more sound on the highway or less sound. Hope that makes senese.

If you do not like the loudness of the Borla on the HWY.
DONT GET THE AIRCHARGER. It is about 50x louder.
I was completely shocked when I heard it on the HWY.
I love how it sounds but if you dont want any more
noise dont get it.:D
 
I installed the K&N AirCharger this weekend. It really complements the Borla Exhaust. Nice sound and great power.
 
Will removing the resonator box make any positive improvement in performance or aggressiveness in engine noise on a 4th gen V6?

How does your exhaust sound with the v6? Is it deep or is it kinda sporty? I really like it but am wondering what it would sound like.
 
do us a favor and keep an eye on the mpg for us.

let us know what is a reasonable increase you are getting.

I would love to get an exhaust put on but I cant justify spending 600+ on a cat back kit. I have also not been able to get a clear size from the other muffler vendors. Flowmaster doesnt even list it on the website and sporttruck websites dont have any other system listed other then the Borla. Anyone have a good site?

How is the sound on the highway? Droning increased or about the same? I am pretty used to the Borla now and know to keep it out of a specific RPM range. What about MPG? Do you notice any difference?

airbox mod

theres not a lot of description on the page but from what it looks like, its definitely less expensive than an aircharger or a volant cold air intake... sorta along the lines of a deckplate mod? of course i'm new and naive to this, but i've been bitten by the mod bug (for better or worse) and it piques my interest.
 
i have one on my 86 4runner. the only thing i noticed is the noise and throttle response when im already moving. it did add nice though to my cat-back
 
I would not dare put a FIPK in my 2002.
Reasons:

1. I take my rig offroad and if you ever go through muddy waters, your engine will be inhaling muddy waters.

2. Cost too much.

3. I did the deckplate mod and it only costed me about $20.

I did a step by step write up of my mod but since I cannot find a web page to host it. I have the write up in MS Word and I also took TONS of pictures. I you own a 2002 and want me to send you what I did, then hook me a Email.

That's IMHO.

i go offroad as well and was concerned about that. but how often do u do water crossing that the water is actually up to air filter? on my rig im always concerned about mud getting to the filter and to my amazement nothing has even touched it. u could put a precharger over it, or since im ghetto when i go offroading put a tube shock over it. works great.
 
Generally speaking if you've got water up high enough to get in the air filter, you've got other problems. You'd have to go in water deep enough to go over the hood which isn't good in any vehicle. Except maybe a Hummer (not an H2), those things are submarines.
 
so u would think. buddy had is 87 runner with water in the cab and over the hood. the water was on the passenger so the ecu never got touched! very lucky, all the truck needed was a starter
 
I'm thinking about placing one of these in my '93 4Runner. I've read where you will get a boost of about 3-4mpg (which would be great). The Yota air breather has a sensor on the top, what happens to this when you install the k&N?
