My Toyota History:
1977 Celica GT (lost to the Nor’easter of 92’)
1992 Corolla (Gave to friend with 245,000)
2002 Mr2 Spyder (Magazine quality, sold do to having children)
2008 Camry (Lease)
2011 Camry (Lease)
2000 4Runner (Future Daily Driver / Tow Vehicle)

Past Builds:
1984 Monte Carlo SS (sold in H.S.)
1982 Jeep CJ 7 (Engine blew up driving to Campus)
1977 International Scout (Body split in two do to removing the top which then caused the fuel tank to leak out)
2002 Mr2 Spyder (Supercharged w/meth injection, 911 Autocross slayer)
1971 Porsche 914-4 (restored to factory original)


The Condition of my 2000 4Runner SR5 when I picked her up in July of 2012:
129,000 miles
Cracked windshield
Non-working instrument cluster (Tach, Speedo, Fuel gauges)
4 Bald tires
Poor brakes / Squishy brake peddle
Ok/Fair looking interior: Carpets stained, Drivers seat tear, rear seat stained
Stolen Cat & O2 sensors (W/Check engine light)
Sagging rear springs
Needs shocks all around
Sway bar & end link bushings shot
Needs complete tune up
Leaking valve cover gaskets
Dented rear bumper

My goal is to have this 4Runner drive and run as close to stock as possible, maybe a little better. I will not lift it as it will be a DD, yet future plans include but not limited to HD front steel bumper, swing out tire carrier rear bumper, Jerry Can on lift gate, suspension / bushings and a Tundra front brake upgrades. Firstly I will try to replace or repair the above issues then work on fun mods.

1. Once I got the 4Runner home I gave her a full interior cleaning. My wife was amazed at the difference when I was done.
2. The following week I replaced the front brake pads (easiest pads I have ever changed). Then the rear brake shoes and I found the reason for the soft brake peddle feel. The rear wheel brake cylinder was leaking only $17.00 at Advanced Auto and the brakes where firm once again.
3. I found a set of used Sonoran steel shackle hangers, I sand blasted and powder coated them and the shackle screw pin Gloss Black.
4. The Engine bay was bother me as some brackets are starting to rust or oxidize so to the blasting box parts are starting to go. I started replacing some rusting bolts with shining new ones.

The Day I brought her home

Replaced the front brake pads (easiest pads I have ever changed). Then the rear brake shoes and I found the reason for the soft brake peddle feel. The rear wheel brake cylinder was leaking only $17.00 at Advanced Auto and the brakes where firm once again.

Funny surface rust, never happends on Long Island. A wire wheel with primer and black paint, fixed it right up

As I was reading "The Condition of my 2000 4Runner SR5 when I picked her up in July of 2012", I was expecting to scroll down and see a big heap of a 4Runner, but then I saw the pic and it looks likes like a pretty nice 4Runner to me. Good buy. I imagine you were able to negotiate a good price considering the issues you listed.

The sandblasting/powdercoating setup is pretty slick, and the MR2 sounds like it was a fun car. Good luck w/the build.

Thanks, I got the 4runner for a fair price, best of all it was a 1 owner car with all maintance done at the same shop. Guy just had enough when the cat went missing at the Local BJ's (guess they saw him comming).

If you liked the front of my toaster take a look at the mods I did to it so I could fit valve covers and track bars etc.

Curved for better convection when baking

The Engine bay was bother me as some brackets are starting to rust or oxidize badly so to the blasting box these parts are starting to go. I started replacing some rusting bolts with shining new ones.

Got out the old old heat gun to soften up the vac hoses

Cruise control, Battrey hold down brackets, etc., blasted and ready for powder

Ready for the toaster

Nice and black again

Better then new.

Look what a Dremmel with wire brush can do.

Great initial cleanup...

I would love to have the setup you have for sandblasting/powder coating.... I have the same corrosion issues... I'll get to the little stuff eventually, however, I had to do the bumpers before the weather changes... I used Rust Bullet...

I love the MR2! That's my future dream project... when the teenagers are gone!! Toyota never sold MR2s beyond the first gens, in Canada, so any around here are imports from the States! Very nice--- rare up here!

How do you like Rust Bullet vs POR 15 any thoughts?

My Spyder was bought by a guy from Nova Scotia, he drove some 10 hours to pick her up. Great cars and fun to drive.

Look what I added to my Tool collection

So I used the Labor day sales to convince my wife that I needed a welder. I figure its never to late to learn a new skill. So Harbor Freight I went and picked up the 90amp Flux Wire Welder to experment with and if I do get better I'll up grade, for now its play time.

New in box

Handle screwed on, just treaded the welding wire.

Already, time to make some ulgy welds.

We have a supplier in Canada called Princess Auto which has the cheapest wire welder I've seen and its still more than I can afford considering I've tuition payments...for teenagers.... think I could trade one for a welder?!?!? I've got three...

Anyways, Rust Bullet seems like it may work as advertised... It is quite thick, it does harden to a ware-able surface. I put 3 coats on, with 2 top coats. We shall see. Check out the thread I started "Stopping the Rust!" I had some responses wrt Rust Bullet and Por15. We can't get Por15 in Canada so I'll see how Rust Bullet performs over time.

The unit I was looking at was $299 however, on their website they have a unit that looks to be similar to the unit you bought for $199 (90A wire flux). All no-name Chinese made. They carry a Lincoln 140W unit for $649..... If I bought down south, duty=30%+13% tax+$40 cdn shipping/brokerage, $20 US shipping...If my calculations are correct that brings it to $190.... That's unfortunately, the price of the new OME 906s rear springs I have my eye on! Maybe I should trade the kid....

I wish...

Oroville Washington is the closest town to me. Not much there! We are about 2hrs drive north of Oroville- 5 hrs from Seattle. When we lived in Vancouver, I lived 5min from Sumas Wa then, and it was no problem to nip across the border before dinner. Still had to pay duty though! Maybe next time we plan a trip across the line, I can make a case to fulfill my wish/shopping list!
