KDSS Long term reliability?

OMG ! So many pages....I see, the Thread is going to the right direction, and very soon we all will get the answer to initial post: What is KDSS Long term reliability in real world ? :nicethread::D

I heard from a neighbor's friend that he knew a guy that read on the internet that it's a reliable system.... so it must be okay.

On the other hand, I don't have it on my SR5, so it must be an overpriced, overly complicated system just waiting to break as soon as the warranty is up.

I already answered that with real world experience/ownership.

Whether or not it is long-term reliable on a T4R is another question better answered by those with a 2010 trail as you will only get 5 years of data for this platform.

KDSS was not wholly developed by Toyota, it's an adaptation of a system designed by Kinetic Suspension Technology, now a subbrand of Tenneco (parent of Monroe and Rancho).

There are two types of Kinetic suspensions.


  1. Reverse Function Stabilizer (RFS) [GX, Land Cruiser, 4Runner]

    This system is passive and purely hydraulic. It was equipped on the Citroen Xsara rally cars which won 2003-2005 WRC manufacturer's titles. It was also featured in the race-spec Mitsubishi Pajeros that entered and won 2004-2005 Paris-Dakar rally championships. It was banned from both events in 2006.

    I still wonder how advantageous this is to a remote sway bar disconnect for recreational use. I mean, it's relative in a rally setting with continually changing conditions, but how many people are racing their Lexuses (Lexii?), LC200s, and 5th gen Runners? I guess the benefit is that it's wife-proof I mean fool-proof so they can have their thicker sway bars.

  2. H2 [Nissan QX56/Patrol, McLaren MP4-12C, McLaren P1]

    This system is also entirely passive and hydraulically driven.

    However, it differs from RFS in that it has NO SWAY BARS. Instead, there are fluid lines that control body roll via hydraulic pressure. Just like RFS, it can tell when to increase resistance (when one side of the car is compressed & other is extended) and when to improve articulation (when axles are angled in opposing ways).

    The McLaren also integrates an Ohlins CES suspension with continuously & independently controlled dampening that combats fore and aft body lean. If you watch or read any reviews of the 12C, you'll notice that every single one commends the ride quality as unprecedented in its category.

    I wouldn't be surprised to see a system like this on the next LX/Cruiser.

Not to thread Jack but I have a 2013 sr5 and my suspension is worn. Looking at Sale thread selling his kdss suspension. It's a direct swap correct? And is $200 a good price for 2014 kdss shocks and springs

it'd be helpful if you posted a link to exactly what you're talking about, but assuming you mean someone's selling the OEM shocks and springs from a KDSS Trail Edition then, yeah, i'd think they'd bolt right up to your SR5. the shocks and springs are the same on KDSS and non-KDSS Trails.

how many miles does your 2013 have? that seems awfully fast for your suspension to be "worn" to the point of replacing. :confused:

fwiw, i'd spend a few extra bucks and at least get a set of Bilsteins. the factory stuff is nothing special.
 
At least I think that's the problem. My KDSS light came on and then I noticed a drip from under the left driver side. The leak is coming from a corroded reservoir with a couple motors, one on each side of the reservoir.

Here's a photo of the leaking part.

that's actually the KDSS control/accumulator module but—holy hell—that is some serious rust problem your 2011 has going on. did you buy it new? it looks like it's completely rotted away right where the hydraulic lines connect to the asssmbly.
 
If Toyota would let me make a Badass 4Runner , I'd ask a lot of some folks on this forum to built some $hit like Ford does the the F-150 Raptor.... Please for the love of trucks ! hehe Lawndart, Cbielat ,Misterquad you should ask for dividents ! And many others also.

Even my so so build rocks where I'm at :) you know !

Are you sure that's rust. That looks like an alloy part that got on contact with some kind of highly corrosive acid.
I dont think they use anything that strong on the roads here in Colorado elsewise all our wheels if not half our cars would be gone by now. I wonder what got on there and where it came from?

Dude... thats the KDSS valve body. That does not look like rust damage, it looks like something is dissolving the block. Does anyone know the block material spec? If no answer I will go out and stick a magnet on mine.

Wow, that's bad (and the frame's not looking so hot, either). You're in Denver? That thing looks like it was submerged in salt water!

Galvanic corrosion, perhaps?
 
That looks like aluminum galvanic corrosion (is that part aluminum?)

holy hell, do you park your vehicle in salt water every night? did you buy it new or used, could it have been a flood salvage?
 
The only thing I can think of is that it must be magnesium and it must have been exposed to an extended period in warm salt water. Galvanic corrosion to magnesium boat parts can cause that level of damage in tropical salt water in 1-2 years time. Possibly in this case less? But you'd need something like a standing electrolyte pool like being parked in salt water for a period of time. It's hard to imagine road salt being enough to cause that damage that quickly. If it were aluminum I'd expect the rest of the aluminum bits to have similar corrosion.
