KDSS warning indicator

Holy thread resurrection batman!

KDSS light on. Appointment is set for tomorrow morning. I'll report back for futur reference.

Report back with the damages. It's good to let people know what happens with KDSS over time and what repair costs are during long term ownership. The 2010s are now in the zone....

Man, i will be looking for a 4runner as soon as i sell my jeep commander and have been stuck between KDSS or NO. Based on this i might just opt out.

Anything not properly maintained, neglected or abused will break over time.

XREAS ring a bell anyone? ... not hating, just saying... pressurized undercarriage systems like this over time are prone to leaking/ breaking/ or becoming a maintenance nightmare... Like anything undercarriage (a real harsh operating environnment), one needs to properly protect the parts mostly against rust which cause seized components, fittings, adjustment scews leading to premature failure..

The KDSS's most likely failure over time, from my internet research, are the adjustment set screws in the box becoming seized. (people usually only find this out too late after trying to lift a KDSS equipped vehicle to level out the truck post lift). The adjustment screws are in a metal box mounted to the frame rail behind the front tire. I think it's 2 - 5 or 10 mm adjustment screws (can't remember) that should be regularly exercised (no more than 3 turns out and in) and anti-seize applied to threads... if I owned a 4Runner with KDSS I'd also fluid film the entire system to help minimize the posisbility of leaks due to corrosion(box, fittings, hoses etc...)...

Lastly, the system has been offered as standard equipment on Toyota's flagship SUV, the Land Cruiser 200 with minimal issues since 2008. Surely it's been thru it's paces during that's platforms R&D as well as in service to date... If you are really concerned about the system I'd suggest going over to ih8mud or expedition portal and searching around.... I doubt you'll find any issues other than the exact scenario I described above. Chances are if you don't lift the vehicle, kdss will never disappoint you.

The hydraulic pump is malfunctioning due to corrosion of its electric connector (joys of eastern Canadian winters - truck is oiled each year tho).

Parts needed to correct the problem:

90980-12303 - 18.45$ CAD (1x 18.45$ CAD)
82998-24260 - 183.12$ CAD (6x 30.52$ CAD)
82999-12120 - 36.30$ CAD (6x 6.05$ CAD)
82999-30010 - 130.20$ CAD (6x 21.70$ CAD)
48006-60031 - 1390.91$ CAD (1x 18.45$ CAD)

2022.39$ CAD (incl. taxes) just in parts!!!!

+ 4 hrs of time to do the job (119.95$ CAD / hr)

Total including taxes = 2574.04$ CAD

The guy at the service dept. told me that most 4runner owners let it that way and come to lower the rear suspension from time to time.

For me, i'll save for a great suspension setup and get rid of KDSS!
Any economical suggestions (I go offroad only once or twice a year)?

Thx!

For real?

One thread with two problems over what, four years?

Yeppz. I been going back and forth, back and forth... And knowing my luck it will go bad!

I just don't want to deal with this out of warranty and I hear it can get expensive.

However I am digging this Toyota community, you guys roxk:humble: and I'm looking forward to getting in the Toyota from my jeep (though I love the 5.7l hemi)

Wait, does this now imply that KDSS stands for Keep Distance, Sudden Swaying!?

:behindsofa:

Wait, I have KDSS...:sobbing:

:lmao:

hmmm... seems to me that the majority of problems stem from messing with the system at all; either while installing a lift, or trying to "fix it" after the fact.

i've operated from the understanding that it's a closed system and, as such, is meant to remain closed. any attempts to diddle with it are at your (pocketbook's) peril.

sucks to hear. "let it that way and come to lower the rear suspension" makes no sense, however.

My 2011 TE with KDSS is still absolutely fine (knock on wood). Truck spent its life in the Northeast and i just obtained it in late 2015. I fluid filmed the entire undercarriage before the winter and will continue to do so every 6 months.

My truck handles like a car on the road and I attribute a lot of that to the KDSS. as mentioned in an earlier post, this is Land Cruiser technology and in my book the cruiser is the holy grail.

Can I just ignore the KDSS pump failure like the service department told me? What will happen over time?

If a leak develop in the system, what is the real impact on driving?

I originally wanted KDSS as well but decided against it in the end. There's plenty of info out there (not just here) to allow you to make a judgment call both for and against it. I drove both and liked KDSS on-road but knowing I wanted a lift and after reading the various reports out on it and repair cost it just wasn't worth it for my situation.

Since you have a quote from Canada do you think you can call independents and dealerships in the US? In all honesty... 2 grand isn't that much for a repair. But it's your money, and not mine. Care to share how many miles you have?

2.6K is a lot for just a little corrosion on a pump!
Truck has 56229 Kilometers (about 35000 miles).
At that price point, I can swap out the entire suspension.
