KDSS worth it?

I'm all for jumping in mixing it up on the forum but many of your questions can be answered with a simple search. It will give you immediate access to to hundreds of posts so you do not have to wait for others to answer your question.

That is the problem. I did a search, got over 300 responses. I don't have time to slug through all of those looking for one that would answer my question. I can understand why you might not want to deal with newbie questions....just ignore those posts....

Unfortunately it is not an easy question to answer. KDSS only comes as an option on the Trail Edition. Do you like the looks and the additional offroad capability of the trail edition? If you are leaning towards the trail edition anyway you might as well get the KDSS option. Great for onroad handeling as well as offroad articulation.

if you're getting a Trail, then yes, i think it's worth it.
I'm not going to flame you for not "searching" first. Frankly I'm getting tired of people complaining about "searches, searches, searches!". Soon enough all material will be covered and there will be nothing we can talk about because it is all already "searchable" :flamethrwoer2:
I love the KDSS and I feel it is worth finding it. In addition to it's advantages off-pavement, it makes a huge difference in on-pavement handling. Very noticeable difference if you have not been able to test drive yet.

Diver110, the KDSS is worth it. Is it worth more than a Torsen center differential? That really depends on what kind of driving you are going to do and in what conditions.

Like Harper7 said on another thread, drive them back to back and buy the one that feels best. If you are choosing between a 2009 "Trail Edition" SR5 4th Gen or a 2011 5th Gen Trail Edition with KDSS, you really can't make a bad decision.Thanks for the feedback. Let me add that part of the reason I have been doing so much posting is that I am at a near term decision making point. If I end up going KDSS, I'll put it off as nothing like that seems to be available nearby. Pretty soon I'll be shutting up

I don't have KDSS and wish I did.....the dealers in my area said I couldn't get it without the Nav option and I wasn't willing to pay for the package with Nav just to get the KDSS. I also didn't do enough research before pulling the trigger on my TE and wish I would have stumbled on this forum before buying.
I'm not trying to be an ass but I would advise taking the time and doing quite a bit of research here on this forum before finalizing a deal. There is all kinds of good info about the 3 models, options, pricing, availability, extended warranties, dealers and more. If you are not in a hurry, use this site to your advantage.

I don't know and I don't really care. KDSS is about on road handling, allowing thicker swaybars that *can* disconnect when needed. If I was more concerned about down travel distance I would have bought a truck, not an SUV.

Well some of us did buy our SUVs for four wheeling, and I will try and get some measurements for you about down travel front and rear. (buddy just got an SR5).

fwiw, i hope you don't "shut up" after making your decision. folks would be especially interested to hear about the 4G Trail if you end up going that way. and another 5G Trail owner is a good addition to the forum too.... part of the reason I have been doing so much posting is that I am at a near term decision making point ... but coming on the board, posting a bunch of new threads for every pre-purchase question you have, and then "shutting up" and going on your merry way would pretty much justify all the "SEARCH, noob!" frustrations, imo. and you'll get little sympathy when you post a new thread next month complaining that your rear wiper is broken. (i'll save you the trouble: the window's not up all the way.)

KDSS was the primary reason I selected the Trail edition. There are of course other things I prefer about the offerings on the Trail, but also things from the Limited I miss. Still, driving a Trail with KDSS provided the best on-road ride for me of the 3 versions. I have had it offroad in strenuous conditions and am thoroughly pleased with the suspension. But to me the glaring difference is on-road handling, and especially when compared to the SR5 the ride feels much tighter.

thanks, I'm interested because it seems like if you were planning on upgrading a trail's suspension to lift it, the handling would improve and make kdss active on road.

KDSS is worth every penny, even if you use your 4Runner for asphalt duty only
