Keep 06 V6 Limited 4WD, or get a T4R w/out center diff?

I've lately started building up my T4R for some more serious off reading than just messing around on trails, and I was wondering, is it worth to try to keep this T4R V6 LTD, with a center differential, or would it be better to find a different T4R with a locking rear differential. Most people here would compare the locking center diff to more of an AWD function than a real 4WD function, since power isn't necessarily split between the two rear wheels (I could be wrong about all this, I'm flying by the seat of my pants and learning as I go...) Others describe the locking rear diff for more serious off roaders.

I guess what I'm basically asking is, is it worth to keep going with this limited, or should I go look for something without the locking center and find a locking rear if there's going to be a big, noticeable difference when I'm off road.

why not save loads of time and money and just install a rear locker in what you have

When the center diff is locked it's a true 50/50 split of power...just like a normal 4wd truck. I agree with beretta...just get a rear locker in this truck and call it a day.

When you lock the center diff on a 4th gen, it behaves just like a part-time system -- the front and rear driveshafts turn at the same speed.

All of the 4th Gen 4Runners have a center diff. There was a very short run of 4th gen trail editions (2009, I think) that also have a locking rear diff. You'll have a hard time finding one of those trail editions.

If you think you need locking rear diff, then just install one. ARB makes a locking rear diff for the 4th gen 4Runner. ARB Air Locker Toyota 8inch 53mm Bearing 30 Spline 3.73 & Down (RD121)
