Keep or trade '04 4runner?

Hi,

Great forum with an amazing amount of information. I've solved a few small problems with my 4runner myself thanks to this forum.

I have a V8 '04 4runner with 150,000 miles. I'm heading to NM to go to graduate school in the fall and I'm debating whether or not to keep my 4runner or trade it in for a Rav4/CRV for the better gas mileage and cheaper maintenance. I want to do an even trade (give or take $1000) so I should be able to get a Rav4/CRV with fewer miles.

So my question is this: keep the 4runner and drive it til it dies, or get a lower mileage Rav4/CRV with better gas mileage?

Also, should I decide to keep the 4runner, at 150,000 miles, what maintenance should I look into doing (I get the oil changed every 5k, I've replaced tires/brakes, and I had the timing belt done at 97,000 miles).

I know there's no real right or wrong answer here; just looking for some opinions.

Thanks for your time!

Don't know what mileage your 4R gets, but you aren't going to get a mileage monster out of a CRV. Mid 20s maybe.

They are nice vehicles - wife's had two, 2007 and 2010, and I bought the daughter an '05. They sure hold value, I'll say that. Dead-bang reliable too.

Have you driven one? I'd be hard pressed to give up my 4R for one tho.

As to advice: seems you've kept the 4R up well, and it's a known entity. Whereas a used CRV.... well, who knows. It's a crap shoot either way. They're both high mileage capable vehicles. You'd better do some test driving.

Keep the 4R!!! Great platform and if you drive it easy and don't mod it out like crazy you can get around 20 ish MPG's (that's what my mom's '06 4R V8 gets, not mine). Like the last post said you also don't know what your getting with someone else's Yota. Toyota should be able to direct you about the maintenance sch.

had an 03 rav4 for 4yrs...small reliable vehicle...abt 270-300miles on a full tank of 56liters!, far better than what i get on my 05 4runner where u get abt 320-380miles on a full tank of almost 90liters....the 04/05rav4 is has eevn better ratings being a 2.4ltr engine....n u can buy a decent one for abt $8 - 11k ......sold the 03 rav4 last yr, bought the 05 v6 4runner, sometimes miss the nimbleness of the rav4..planning to buy an 04/05 for wifey.

You're going to New Mexico? Keep the 4Runner and wheel the crap out of it, spend a thousand or so on a nice mountainbike or street legal dirtbike for commuting (and wheel the crap out of that too).

I would keep the 4Runner. As long as you keep up the good maintenance, she will last you forever.

My vote is to keep the 4R, go explore NM desert!!! It'll be a nice escape from all the studying you're going to do. Plus, you know the 4R's history as far as maintenance and all that. You buy another vehicle, you may inherit other people's problems with the vehicle.

Keep the Runner. What money you would save on gas on the other 2 you'd spend on something else anyway in some sort of entertainment. Probly in goin out and things like that. With the Runner all you'd need to do is get in and find another unexplored trail. Get a fishing pole.. 4runners and fishing poles are a hard combo to beat lol..
