Keeping out exhaust with back window down

I like to drive with the back window down sometimes. If I drop it more than an inch or so I get exhaust coming in the cab. If I adjust the windows up front I can minimize it but if I change speeds I have to readjust.

My rig did not come with a rear deflector...does it help at all with the exhaust smell coming in?

That rear deflector you don't have - that's exactly what it does. It keeps exhaust from blowing into your cab! I bet you can pick one up pretty easy, online
 
also , I think , that the stock exhaust coming out the side helps. back in the "olden" days..to keep the exhaust from coming in the back tailgate window was to reroute the exhaust to the side. Ive seen a lot of cars with exhaust out the back, when they originally came out the side. Some of the early performance exhaust systems for the 4runner came out the back instead of right behind the pass rear tire
 
I just open sunroof part or all way for super sweet flow thru out the rear and no noise from side windows cracked or down all the way, works except maybe when stopped but that's what the Up button is for, eh?

I'm pretty sure Toyo got rid of the rear window deflector towards the end of the 3rd gen run cuz of fuel mileage lowered via the Parachute effect it also has. :^( :cowboy:

Thanks, I'll start looking around for one. I thought they mostly helped keep the rear window clear of rain and dust. I can't see it helping with the window wide open but maybe it's worth a shot.

On the other hand do they get ripped off or damaged trail riding by trees and such? I don't have a factory roof rack either...

Amen on the sunroof/rear combo. My 02 came with a rear deflector tho. Love it.
 
Odd.

I drive with my rear window down/cracked all the time and I've never experienced this both on the road or the trails.

Full disclosure, I do have the deflector thingy though.
 
I noticed this the other day too.
So, i have the deflector and still get some fumes(enough that the wife brought it up, so probably not that much) but depending on the speed i'll just roll the windows down further and it cancels it out. My sunroof doesnt currently work so maybe i need to address that and try the blow through effect

i should note, i only get the fumes over like 20 mph with the windows up or mostly up. lower speeds is just fine

The 2nd Gen I used to have and my 3rd both have the rear window deflectors and neither ever had a problem with exhaust in the cab.

I'm only familiar with the 5th gen but all that I've seen have the tail pipe out the back.
 
update: being that i have not had the time to address the sunroof issue i gave the vent/rear window down trick a try and it worked really well! Can't find who suggested it but thank you!
Just had the vent from outside blowing a little and i got zero fumes.
 
My two pups travel in the cargo area,
so I really like to crack the rear window for them.
(they make faces at the person driving behind me)

But even with windows and sunroof open, I still smell fumes.
And if I can smell it, I know the dogs aren't enjoying it.

I don't have a rear deflector, so I guess I need to modify the tailpipe mas others have suggested.
It was nice to know I am not the only person with this problem!

Try side windows up, vent on medium pulling from outside. That worked for me but if i even crack the windows it pulls fumes in.
