so i finished the install. everything works well just hard going from one brand unit to another. I took out my pioneer and put in the kenwood with ease.

Looks nice, thanks for posting pics. I will be doing the Kenwood DDX616 fairly soon and was wondering does your unit have the USB cable set up? Where did you run the cable to if so.

Again good looking install, I cant wait to do mine!

If you have a way to measure the voltage supplied to the stereo when switching between ON and ACC, you might find that voltage is dropping below acceptable operating levels of the Kenwood (should be listed in the manual)....that's the first thing I would check.

ok i can check that with a volt meter tmr. i was also going to try soldering the connections instead of using butt connectors for a more solid connection. think it would help keep voltage more constant?

You need to ensure voltage of the accessory ON switch wire...it's the one that sends the ON/OFF signal to the HU. There should be two power supply wires....One is a constant 12v feed that actually powers the HU, and the other is the 12v that tells the HU when to turn on and off. The later is the one I suspect that might be falling below acceptable voltage while you turn your key on and off.

Properly used butt connectors are almost always good connections, but sometimes w/ the limited space to work with, they are not always crimped tight enough. As an added bit of insurance when working with butt connectors I use dielectric silicone compound squeezed into the connector prior to crimping.

The two power wires I speak of might be colored ( check the manual to be sure) RED- Constant 12v power supply, (EDIT) YELLOW- Accesory on switch.

Again, I am only guessing whats going on, but it needs to be ruled out that voltage does not drop below the proper range ( again it should be listed in the manual as operating voltage range ).

I'd start there with checking that out, maybe someone else has some other things for you.

Good luck, and I cant wait to upgrade my SR5 stereo to a pretty touchscreen!

EDIT- Zoomed in on your wire harness pic, I would think the wire I suspect is the yellow one next to the red....AGAIN just a guess, w/o a manual to check.

i went with kenwood because 2 years ago i bought the pioneer and it broke 2 weeks ago. herd the kenwood was highly recommended and i went with it because of the Garmin navi (not what it cracked up to be). I have had so many problems with the kenwood and am looking to return and go with the pioneer x920bt. my old pioneers only compliant was it was slow but i think that is fixed now and in regards to it braking nothing a 4 yr warranty cant fix

Any thoughts

Im testing the voltage tmr after school. have not had any time with work and school

So i ripped out the dnx 6160 and i ordered my pioneer x920bt, going back to the pioneer! does anyone have any questions from my last install or new stereo question i can address when i put the new one in on friday? i am going to show where im going to put the usb port and about the bypass mod for navigation and dvd playback.

What type of issues did you have with the DNX6160. We currenly have the Kenwood DDX-514 and are having issues with the bluetooth, it was a seperate module added, so we are getting everything removed and were planning on getting the DNX6160 installed. Can you let me know what issues you had...

I know I don't post a lot here but if I can save ANYBODY the time and frustration (not to mention wasting large amounts of money) I will advise the never to buy Kenwood. Especially the DNX series as they are so problem plagued you will switch to another brand. I don't have A DNX6160 but the DNX7160.
